John Plender has been a senior editorial writer and columnist at the Financial Times since 1981, an assignment he combined until recently with current affairs broadcasting for the BBC and Channel Four. He has a weekly column on economics and business on Mondays and also writes for the opinion pages.
John Quelch, the Harvard Business School marketing professor, has an interesting post on his blog about companies that defy conventional wisdom by dominating the mid-market, instead of focusing solely on the high or low ends. Professor Quelch cites the examples of Tesco, Toyota and Charles Schwab as companies that have adopted this strategy. As he notes, Tesco and Toyota have gone into premium segments after securing the mid-market first.

A very big spirit in a little body, Lara is a bridge in every sense - between spiritual and physical realities, between consciousness paradigms, between eastern and western cultures, between her fellow humans and between various aspects of SELF. She is dedicated to bridging together all races, genders, cultures, beliefs, practices, perspectives, souls and their journeys...that make up the grand tapestry of life. In truth, Lara never went out searching for anything, instead it all found her, as her life unfolded (and continues to unfold) in a most unexpected manner. Years ago, following a near-death experience in the Peruvian Andes, Lara was chosen to be initiated into a closely guarded Incan tradition of energy medicine. This was the open door which then allowed Lara to spontaneously re-connect with the 12 Divine Laws of Healing that were already deep within her (see her book, The Freedom of Innocence 2005). From being an International Business Analyst and Journalist, who has been associated with Business Week Magazine and The Financial Times, Lara found herself on a very different, far more humble journey...one of serving humanity with her gift of healing. Coming full circle, Lara integrated everything she was with everything she is, pooling together experience and expertise from 2 very different realms. Today, Lara's specialty is igniting creative potential within individuals and organisations. Lara maintains a global presence spanning 6 continents. She has clients and students in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Australia, New Zealand, U.K., Spain, France, Norway, United States, Canada, Peru, Costa Rica, Turkey, Egypt and Morocco. She resides on the sacred island of Kaua'i, in Hawai'i.

In a commentary on Business on the BBC World Service in January 2008, Lucy Kellaway, a columnist for the Financial Times, recounted her experiences spending a day with Korn Ferry pretending to be a headhunter. "I raced around London in taxis, sat in on interviews and drew up lists. When it was time to go home, I asked the woman I had been shadowing if she would give me a job. No, she replied after an indecently short pause. The main problem with me, she said, was that I said what I thought." Acknowledging that Finding the right person for the right job is more important than most things, and anyone who can do it deserves not only a place in heaven (or similar) but also the thwacking great fee they extract for their efforts", Kellaway went on to describe how one large executive search firm provides their clients, amongst other things, with a "Leadership Advantage Toolkit " to assist them to define the kind of person they are seeking. "Included were 66 characteristics that might be desirable in a leader, including "dealing with paradox" and "organisational agility" to be rated according to "mission critical", "important" and so on.
