First Solar is engaged in designing and manufacturing solar modules using a proprietary thin film semiconductor technology. Co.'s solar modules employ a thin layer of cadmium telluride semiconductor material to convert sunlight into electricity. Cadmium telluride has absorption properties that are highly matched to the solar spectrum and has the potential to deliver competitive conversion efficiencies with approximately 1.0% of the semiconductor material used by traditional crystalline silicon solar modules. In addition, Co. manufactures its solar modules on a high-throughput production line and performs all manufacturing steps themselves in an automated, continuous process.
