James D. Bennett is counsel to Farrell Fritz concentrating in estate administration and planning. Mr. Bennett was appointed Commissioner of the New York State Public Service Commission in March 1998, and his term ran through April 2004. Prior to his appointment to the Commission, Mr. Bennett served on the Board of the Long Island Power Authority, where he served on various committees and was Chairman of the Conservation/Competition Committee. He has represented the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) in testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee and has been selected as one of six Commissioners from throughout the country to serve on the NARUC special committee constituted to assess infrastructure vulnerability and consequence mitigation after the events of September 11. Mr. Bennett has been active in civic, community, business and legal activities for several decades, having served the Kiwanis, the Boy Scouts of America, the American Cancer Society, as Chairman of the Long Island Area Development Agency, Chairman of the Long Island Regional Export Council, and as a member of the Long Island Tourism Commission. Active in real estate management, Mr. Bennett was CEO of the Holiday Inn located in Rockville Centre, New York. He served on the board of the St. Francis-Mercy Hospital Corporation. He was Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead and the County of Nassau from 1978 to 1987. Prior to those responsibilities, he was a Town Councilman from 1967 through 1977, during which time he served as Chairman of all Town Committees including Parks and Recreation, Traffic, Lighting, Sanitation and Conservation and Waterways. On the County Board of Supervisors, Mr. Bennett chaired the Committees of Commerce and Industry as well as education. He was appointed by Governor Hugh Carey and Governor Mario Cuomo to the New York State Conservation Fund Advisory Council. He is also on the Board of Flushing Savings Bank. Mr. Bennett has served on the Board of Directors for Southampton Hospital. Mr. Bennett attended Cornell University and Cornell Law School, where he was an honors graduate, serving on the Cornell Law Quarterly (1961-62). He was elected to the Executive Committee of the Cornell Law School in 1993 for a second three-year term. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant and was a Lieutenant Colonel in the New York State Guard.
