Andrin Oswald, M.D., is CEO of the Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics
Division, a position he assumed in December 2008. He is a

Before joining Novartis in 2005, Dr. Oswald worked with McKinsey
and Company, Switzerland. From 2005 to 2008, he advanced from
Assistant to the Chairman and CEO to Head of the Country Pharma
Organization (CPO) and Country President for Novartis in South
Korea to CEO of Speedel and Global Head of Development
Franchises at Novartis Pharma.
Dr. Oswald graduated with an M.D. from the University of Geneva,
Switzerland, in 1999 and was a delegate of the International Committee
of the Red Cross (ICRC) to Nepal from 2002 to 2003.

David Epstein is Head of Novartis Oncology and since December

Before joining Novartis, Epstein was an associate in the Strategy
Practice of the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton in the United

Pharmaceuticals Corporation in the United States and Head of
Novartis Specialty Medicines.
He graduated with a B.S. in pharmacy from Rutgers University College
of Pharmacy in 1984 and with an M.B.A. in finance and marketing
from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business in 1987.

Dr. Vasella joined the Alcon, Inc. board in July 2008 following the closing of the sale of the 24.85 percent minority interest of Alcon, Inc. by Nestlé S.A. to Novartis AG.

George Gunn is CEO of Novartis Consumer Health and of Novartis
Animal Health. Gunn has been a permanent attendee of the Executive
Committee of Novartis since December 1, 2008.
Before joining Novartis, Gunn was President of Pharmacia Animal
Health, based in the United States. Prior to Pharmacia, he spent more
than 15 years in positions of increasing responsibility in healthcare
companies. He worked as a veterinary surgeon for nine years before
joining industry.
Gunn joined Novartis in 2003 as Head of Novartis Animal Health,
North America. In January 2004, he assumed his position as Head
of the Animal Health Business Unit. In addition to this role, he was
appointed Head of the Consumer Health Division in December 2008.
Gunn graduated with a Bachelor of veterinary medicine and surgery
degree and a diploma in veterinary state medicine from the Royal
(Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, United Kingdom,
in 1973. In 2008 he received an honorary doctorate in veterinary
medicine and surgery from the University of Edinburgh.

Jeff George was appointed CEO of Sandoz in December 2008.

George joined Novartis in the Vaccines Division in January 2007
as Head of Commercial Operations for Western and Eastern Europe
and then advanced to Head of Emerging Markets for the Middle East,
Africa, Southeast Asia and CIS at Novartis Pharma. Before joining
Novartis, he was a Senior Director of Strategy and Business Development
at Gap Inc. in San Francisco, and was with McKinsey and Company
in San Francisco from 2001 to 2004.
George graduated with an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins University’s
School of Advanced International Studies in 1999, where he studied
international economics and emerging markets political economy.
He received an M.B.A. from Harvard University
in 2001.

Joseph Jimenez is CEO of the Pharmaceuticals Division. He joined
Novartis in April 2007 as CEO of the Consumer Health Division and
was appointed to his present position in October 2007. He has been
a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis since November

Jimenez began his career at The Clorox Company, California, and
later served as president of two operating divisions at ConAgra,
Nebraska. In 1998, he joined the H.J. Heinz Company, Pennsylvania,
and was named President and Chief Executive Officer of the North
America business. From 2002 to 2006, he served as President and
Chief Executive Officer of Heinz in Europe. Before joining Novartis,
he served as a non-executive director of AstraZeneca plc, United
Kingdom, from 2002 to 2007, and was an advisor for the private
equity organization Blackstone Group, New York.
Jimenez graduated with a B.A. from Stanford University in 1982 and
earned an M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1984.

Joerg Reinhardt, Ph.D, was named Chief Operating Officer of
Novartis on December 1, 2008, and has been a member of the
Executive Committee of Novartis since January 1, 2007.
Reinhardt joined Sandoz Pharma Ltd. in 1982 and held positions
of increasing responsibility in Research and Development for the
company. In 1994, he was named Head of Development for Sandoz
Pharma Ltd. After the merger that created Novartis in 1996, Reinhardt
became Head of Preclinical Development and Project Management
for Novartis and assumed the position of Head of Pharmaceutical
Development in 1999. From 2006 to 2008, he served as
Head of the Vaccines and Diagnostics Division. He also chairs the
Board of Directors of the Genomics Institute of the Novartis
Foundation in La Jolla, California.
Reinhardt graduated with a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from
the University of Saarbruecken, Germany, in 1981.

Leon V. Schumacher is the Group CIO of Novartis and responsible
for Information Technology across all divisions worldwide, a
position he assumed in January 2009. Leon Schumacher reports
to the Chief Operating Officer of Novartis.
Before joining Novartis, Schumacher was the CIO of Arcelor Mittal
in the Americas, the world-leading steel company. Prior to the
merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel, he was the Group CIO for
Mittal Steel Company in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Since 1993, Schumacher has built his international career by
holding senior positions of increasing responsibility in operations,
finance, strategy, logistics and IT. Among others, this has included
companies in the steel industry in the US and Europe, such as the
internet trading venture Global Steel Exchange, Arcelor International
and Mittal Steel.
Schumacher graduated with a masters degree in electrical
Raymund Breu, Ph.D., is Chief Financial Officer of Novartis AG. He
assumed this position when Novartis was created in 1996. He has
been a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis since 1996.
Breu joined the Treasury Department of the Sandoz Group in 1975.
In 1982 he became Head of Finance for the Sandoz affiliates in the
United Kingdom. In 1985 he was appointed Chief Financial Officer
of Sandoz Corporation in New York, where he was responsible for all
Sandoz Finance activities in the United States. In 1990 he became
Group Treasurer of Sandoz Ltd., Basel, Switzerland, and, in 1993,
Head of Group Finance and Member of the Sandoz Executive Board.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Swiss Re and the
Swiss takeover commission.
Breu graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH)
in Zurich, Switzerland, with a Ph.D. in mathematics.
Andreas Rummelt, Ph.D., is Group Head of Quality Assurance and
Technical Operations, a position he assumed in December 2008.
Rummelt has been a member of the Executive Committee of
Novartis since January 1, 2006.
He joined Sandoz Pharma Ltd. in 1985 and held various positions
of increasing responsibility in Development. In 1994, he was appointed
Head of Worldwide Technical Research and Development,
a position he retained following the merger that created Novartis in
1996. From 1999 to 2004, Rummelt served as Head of Technical
Operations of the Novartis Pharmaceuticals Division and from 2004
to 2008 as Head of Sandoz.
Rummelt graduated with a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from
the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg, Germany.

Ann Bailey was named Head of Corporate Communications in April
2005.
Before taking on this role, she was Head of the Global IQP Program
Office, where she was responsible for developing and implementing
the global Pharma IQP initiative, a project-based performance
improvement initiative focused on continuous improvement through
new skills and knowledge.
Prior to leading the Global IQP Program Office, Ann served as Head
of Pharmaceutical Operations – France. In this role, she oversaw
manufacturing, quality assurance and logistics for Novartis
pharmaceutical products within France. Her leadership led to the site
becoming the global manufacturing Center of Excellence for liquids
and suppository products, with consistently strong customer service
levels and quality performance.
Ann began her Novartis career in 1982 with the company's Consumer
Health division in the Over-the-Counter (OTC) business. She also
served in numerous operational management positions in OTC,
Animal Health, Agro and Pharma. Following the Ciba-Sandoz merger
in 1996, Ann became Head of Global Quality Operations – Americas
Region, where she established a strong relationship and reputation
with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She also created
the North American Quality Council, responsible for coordinating
quality issues, communication of regulatory issues and development
of synergies and best practices among Novartis business units. In
addition to the healthcare industry, Ann also has experience in the
automotive and utilities industries.
Ann has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from
Cornell University, and completed graduate coursework in
Business at the University of Nebraska.

Juergen Brokatzky-Geiger, Ph.D., is head of Human Resources
for Novartis, a position he assumed in 2003. Brokatzky-Geiger
has been a member of the Executive Committee of Novartis since
January 1, 2005.
Brokatzky-Geiger joined Ciba-Geigy Ltd. in 1983 as a Laboratory
Head in the Pharmaceuticals Division. After a job rotation in Summit,
New Jersey, he held positions of increasing responsibility in
Research and Development (R&D) including Group Leader of Process
R&D, Head of Process R&D, and Head of Process Development
and Pilot Plant Operations.
During the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz in 1996, Brokatzky-
Geiger was appointed Integration Officer of Technical Operations.
He later became the Head of Chemical and Analytical Development
and served as the Global Head of Technical R&D from 1999 to
August 2003.
Brokatzky-Geiger graduated with a Ph.D. in chemistry from the
University of Freiburg, Germany, in 1982.

Paul Herrling is Head of Corporate Research at Novartis, a position he assumed in November 2002. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) in Singapore, a long-term endeavor to advance medical research in tropical infectious diseases, which historically have received little drug-research funding. In addition, he oversees the Friedrich Miescher Institute (FMI) in Basel, Switzerland, the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) in California, USA and the Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health (NVGH) in Siena, Italy.
Prior to his current position, Paul Herrling was Head of Global Research of Novartis Pharma and a member of the Pharma Executive Committee (PEC). In this capacity, he directed the integration of the research organizations of Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy following their merger in 1996 to form Novartis.
Paul Herrling joined Sandoz Pharma in 1975 and held various positions in research at both Sandoz in Basel, Switzerland and Wander in Bern, Switzerland. In 1985, he became Head of the Sandoz Research Institute in Bern and Head of the Preclinical CNS Research Department at Sandoz Pharma in Basel. In 1992, he was made Head of Preclinical Research Basel for Sandoz Pharma and, in 1994, Head of Corporate Research.
He is also a Professor of Drug Discovery Science at the University of Basel, Switzerland. In addition to scientific editing activities, he serves on several boards, most notably Board of Trustees of The Scripps Research Institute, University Council of the University of Basel and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi). Since January 2008 he is also the Vice-President of the ETH Board (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology).
Paul Herrling obtained his Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Zurich, Switzerland and was a post-doctorate fellow at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the USA.

Thomas Wellauer, Ph.D., is Head of Corporate Affairs for Novartis,

Corporate Integrity and Compliance, Corporate Security,

He started his career with McKinsey and Company, Switzerland,

he was named CEO of the Winterthur Insurance Group, Switzerland,
which later was acquired by Credit Suisse. At Credit Suisse he was
a member of the Group Executive Board, initially responsible for the
Group’s insurance business before becoming CEO of the Financial
Services Division. Before joining Novartis, Wellauer headed and
completed the Clariant Performance Improvement Program, a global
turnaround project at the specialty chemicals maker.
Wellauer graduated with a Ph.D. in systems engineering and an
M.S. in chemical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of
Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. He also holds an M.B.A.
from the University of Zurich.

He is a Director of EcoCarbone SA and Amazentis SA and was formerly Chairman of the CITCO Group (1995-2005). He is also Vice-Chairman of the Montreux Jazz Festival Foundation.
Professional background Pierre Landolt graduated with bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Paris-Assas. From 1974 to 1976, he worked for Sandoz Brazil SA. In 1977, he acquired an agricultural estate in the semi-arid northeast region of Brazil and, over several years, converted it into a model farm in organic and biodynamic production. Since 1997 Pierre Landolt has been Associate and Chairman of AxialPar Ltda, Brazil, an investment company focused on sustainable development, with investments in fish farming, soybean for human consumption and organic vegetable. In 2000, he co-founded EcoCarbone SA, France, a company active in the design and development of carbon-sequestration processes in Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. In 2007, he co-founded Amazentis SA, a start-up company active in the convergence space of medication and nutrition. In addition to his private activities, Pierre Landolt has been President of the Sandoz Family Foundation since 1994 and oversees the development of the foundation in several investment fields, inter alia hotel, watch making and telecommunications.

Rolf M. Zinkernagel is a Venture Partner and Scientific Partner of Aravis. He is Professor and former Head of the Institute of Experimental Immunology, Department of Pathology at the University of Zurich. He is specialized in infectious diseases and immunopathology and a pioneer in research on self-nonself discrimination in immunology. Rolf M. Zinkernagel was elected to the Board of Directors of Novartis AG in 1999. Until 2003 he was a member of the Board of Directors of Cytos Biotechnology. He is member of scientific advisory boards and science consultant to various life science companies. Among many other honors and awards for his contributions to science Rolf M. Zinkernagel received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1996.

Professional background Ulrich Lehner graduated in business administration and mechanical engineering from the Darmstadt University of Technology in 1975. From 1975 to 1981, he was an auditor with KPMG Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft AG in Duesseldorf. In 1981, he joined Henkel KGaA. After heading the Controlling Department of Fried. Krupp GmbH in Germany from 1983 to 1986, Ulrich Lehner returned to Henkel as Finance Director. From 1991 to 1994, he headed the Management Holding Henkel Asia-Pacific Ltd. in Hong Kong, and from 1995 to 2000, served as Executive Vice President, Finance/Logistics (CFO), of Henkel KGaA. From 2000 to 2008, Ulrich Lehner served as Chairman of the Management Board of Henkel KGaA.
