Bruce D. Cheson, M.D., FACP, FAAS Scientific Advisory Board Member. Dr. Cheson attended the University of Virginia and then Tufts University Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia Hospitals and then a clinical and research fellowship in Hematology at New England Medical Center Hospital. From 1977-1984 he was Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Utah. From 1986-2002, he was Head, Medicine Section, CTEP at the National Cancer Institute. Since 2002, Dr. Cheson has been Professor of Medicine, Head of Hematology and Director of Hematology Research at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Cheson has authored over 300 medical publications and abstracts and has contributed to over 50 texts. He is on the editorial board of numerous journals and is Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oncology, and Oncology News international. He is an Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Lymphoma and Myeloma and Clinical Advances in Hematology and Oncology. He has also been the editor of the American College of Physician's Medical Knowledge Assessment Program in Oncology and the ASCO SEP. He has served on several committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and was on its Board of Directors, and edited ASCO News and ASCO Daily News. From 2002-2006, he was on the Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He currently chairs the Lymphoma Committee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, and is co-chair of the International Harmonization Project in Lymphoma and the AJCC Subcommittee on Lymphoma. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and is its President-Elect. Dr. Cheson's clinical interests focus on the development and evaluation of new therapeutic approaches for hematologic malignancies.
Professor Fraser C. Henderson, Sr., is Director of Neurosurgery of the Spine and Craniocervical Junction, Co-Director of the Neuro-Oncology and Childhood Cancer Division of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Co-Director of Radiosurgery and Medical Director of the Acute and Step-Down Brain and Spine Units at Georgetown University Hospital.. He specializes in tumors of the skull base, spinal cord and spine, and has worked with the CyberKnife System to advance stereotactic radiosurgical treatment of spinal and craniocervical tumors. He is a well- known lecturer on treatment of the disorders of the spine having made over 70 scientific presentations and published 50 articles in professional journals and specialty texts. He holds 4 patents in the US for devices pertaining to cancer and trauma of the spine. His present research focuses on regulation of surface molecules in cancer and trauma, and the development of stress models of the brainstem and spine in chronic and acute injury. Dr. Henderson received his baccalaureate and medical degree from the University of Virginia. He, received training in general surgery at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, and then studied neurosurgery under Professor Phanor Perot at the Medical University of South Carolina. Commander Henderson served in three campaigns with the USN. He was the International Fellow for Spine and Craniocervical Surgery under Professor Crockard, at The National Hospitals for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, London. Dr. Henderson holds membership in the Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Washington Academy of Neurosurgeons, the Joint AANS-CNS Sections for Tumors, Spine and Peripheral Nerves, Trauma and Critical Care.
Peter Carson, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He is also a staff physician and Co-Director of Heart Failure Service at Georgetown University Hospital. He is a Principal Investigator on the WATCH trial, serves on the Executive Committee for the VANQUISH trial, on the Steering Committee for the BEST trial, and on the Endpoint Committees for the RENAISSANCE/RECOVER and the OVERTURE trials. Dr. Carson is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, serves on the editorial boards of the Newspaper of Cardiology and the Journal of Congestive Heart Failure, and is an abstract reviewer for the American Heart Association and the Heart Failure Society of America. He has also authored or co-authored a number of articles on heart failure. He received his medical degree from and was a research assistant and summer research fellow at the University of North Carolina. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center and a residency at Case Western Reserve University Medical School. Dr. Carson was also a Cardiology Fellow at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

Dr. Ayman Hakki is a board certified general surgeon who received plastic surgery training at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. He is one of the leading cosmetic surgeons in the Baltimore, Maryland area and an esteemed member of the team at Chesapeake Plastic Surgery Associates. He is a recognized portrait artist and brings his artistic skill to his work as a cosmetic surgeon. He has written a number of important scientific papers on the subject of cosmetic surgery and has presented these at national meetings. Dr. Ayman Hakki established his cosmetic surgery office in the Washington, D.C., area in 1993, as well as a very successful practice in Maryland. He was featured recently on MTV's "True Life". Dr. Hakki has published a monthly article in Medical News of Maryland for the past 10 years and has been a guest speaker at numerous cosmetic surgery seminars. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is also Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital. He continues to be active in teaching cosmetic surgery techniques to younger physicians.

A native of Flushing, New York, Dr. John McConnell has always liked working with his hands and knew he would enjoy the variety of patients and problems he could treat as an orthopaedic surgeon. After earning a BS in Chemistry from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, Dr. McConnell received his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School. He then completed a general surgery internship at Northshore University Hospital in Long Island, New York, and returned to Washington to do an orthopaedic surgery residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. McConnell enjoys the challenge of performing complicated operations and finds great satisfaction in seeing his patients get well. He has a special interest in sports medicine and performs a number of intricate procedures including arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions, arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, and shoulder stabilization procedures. As an active participant in the professional medical arena, Dr. McConnell has served as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center and as a member of the Applicant Review Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Also involved in academia, he serves as Director of the Orthopaedic Residency Program at Virginia Hospital Center and as a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital where he is a three-time recipient of the Kenmore Orthopaedic Teaching Award. Additionally, Dr. McConnell is involved in the local community where he has volunteered time at the Children's Special Services Clinic in Arlington and he served as team physician for the Washington Redskins for five years.

Dr. Kenneth Tercyak is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Oncology and Pediatrics. He serves as the director of Pediatric Psychology Research and Service in the clinical Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, and is a member of the Cancer Control Program and Fisher Center for Familial Cancer Research at Lombardi. Dr. Tercyak is also an attending psychologist at Georgetown University Hospital where he provides care to children and adolescents with cancer. His primary research interests include the prevention and control of cancer and tobacco risks among youth, behavioral interventions to promote youth health, psychosocial oncology and genetic testing, and cancer survivorship. Dr. Tercyak is principal investigator for two ongoing NIH randomized controlled trials: a telephone-based cancer education and prevention intervention for teens, and a decision making intervention for mothers participating in cancer genetic counseling. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed papers. For the past several years Dr. Tercyak has served as a reviewer on many study sections for the NIH, ACS, Komen Foundation, and the Dutch Cancer Society including the NIH Behavioral Medicine Interventions and Outcomes study section. He has been an ad hoc reviewer for more than 13 journals and currently serves as Associate Editor for prevention at the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Dr. Tercyak serves as a member of the admissions committee for the Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies Program and co-chairs the GUMC Research Committee.
Kirsten H. Edmiston, MD is a 1988 graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine. She completed her surgical residency at the University of Maryland Hospital and its affiliate hospitals in June 1993. Following the completion of her general surgery residency, Dr. Edmiston attended the City of Hope National Medical Center for a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology and did two years of colorectal cancer metastasis research at the Harvard Medical School/ Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She has published several articles on mechanisms of hepatic metastasis in Cancer Research. Dr. Edmiston joined Virginia Surgery Associates in 1997. She is on the medical staff at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, Fair Oaks Hospital and Loudoun Hospital. Dr. Edmiston is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is currently appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital and the Virginia Commonwealth University, where she is a faculty member of the surgical residency program. In addition, Dr. Edmiston is the Medical Director of the Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center and the physician liaison for Fairfax and Fair Oaks Hospitals for the American College of Surgeon's Commission on Cancer. As the medical director, Dr. Edmiston works to advance the delivery of state of the art cancer care at Inova Fairfax Hospital and Inova Health System
Konrad W. Bakker, M.D. graduated from the University of Amsterdam School of Medicine in The Netherlands in 1981. He performed rotating internships at the University of Leiden Medical Center in The Netherlands during 1981-1982. Dr. Bakker was a visiting fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD during 1983-1984. His then completed his residency program in Neurology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC during 1984-1987. He is board-certified in Neurology with added qualifications in Neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Bakker is board-certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). In addition, he is board-certified in Electro Diagnostic Medicine by the American Board of Electro Diagnostic Medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Bakker is an active member of the American Sleep Disorders Association, American Neurological Association, and the American Society of Neuroimaging. He holds a position of Clinical Instructor at Georgetown University School of Medicine and is one of the Medical Directors of Shady Grove Sleep Disorders Center in Rockville, MD. He is a staff member at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Loudoun Hospital Center, and Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Bunning has directed the Arthritis Program at the National Rehabilitation Hospital since 1986. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Rheumatology. He has a traditional practice treating arthritis with additional expertise in the use of exercise therapy and the use of the rehabilitation team. Other clinical interests include gout, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and muscle disease. He has extensive experience in maximizing outcomes after total joint replacement using a rehabilitation program. Dr. Bunning is a past president of the Rehabilitation Section of DC Rheumatism Society, and has served on the Executive Committee of the American College of Rheumatology for 3 years. He also served as a member of the Medical Board of the DC Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. He is on the clinical faculty of Georgetown University Hospital, and is a former chief medical resident of the Washington Hospital Center. His undergraduate degree is from Princeton University and his Medical Degree is from University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Prasad has published numerous articles and book chapters and has spoken on many occasions at both national and international scientific meetings on multiple topics within neurotology and skull base surgery. He is a clinical assistant professor at both Georgetown University Hospital and George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Prasad is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology with subspecialty certification in neurotology, advanced head and neck oncologic surgery and cranial base surgery. The practice is almost entirely limited to otology, neurotology and head and neck cranial base surgery. The majority the surgical procedures are performed at Georgetown University Hospital, Fairfax Hospital, Suburban Hospital.

Dr. Harris is the Medical Monitor for Napo's Phase 3 trial for CRO-HIV. He is presently the Chief Medical Officer of Ocera Therapeutics, Inc. Prior to joining Ocera, Dr. Harris held the position of Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Clinical Affairs at Napo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is responsible for the Phase 3 development program of crofelemer for AIDS-related diarrhea (CRO-HIV) and for overseeing Napo's ongoing clinical development activity. Prior to joining Napo, Dr. Harris was a principal of Middleburg Consultants, Inc., a pharmaceutical and healthcare consulting firm, and Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of the Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Harris has held faculty positions at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he conducted basic research in the mechanisms of diarrhea, and the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he served as Clinical Professor and Head of the Division of Gastroenterology. In 1999, he joined the pharmaceutical industry as US Director of Medical Affairs at Schwarz Pharma where he supported the development of generic omeprazole and the launch of NuLev . Dr. Harris later joined Otsuka America as project leader for the clinical development of tetomilast (OPC-6535), a small molecule for treatment of ulcerative colitis, in North America, Australia, and Europe. Dr. Harris is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He undertook his post-graduate medical training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine and holds an M.S. in population health and administrative medicine from the University of Wisconsin Schools of Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr. Harris has served as a member of the International Advisory Panel of the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, the leading organization for irritable bowel syndrome advocacy, research and education, and President of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) in Wisconsin. He is a recipient of the CCFA Premier Physican Award.
