In 1952, Glenn O. Hawbaker purchased equipment from his brother, Al (a local housing contractor), and formed his own excavating and grading company. He began working with other housing contractors in the State College area and was awarded contracts on large developments such as Toftrees, downtown State College apartments and Parkway Plaza. He soon branched out into more heavy commercial work and opened the Pleasant Gap asphalt plant in 1974 and an aggregate-crushing operation in 1983. His company's facilities and equipment made it the natural choice for many local paving projects, as well as curb, sidewalk, driveway, roadbed and bridge construction work. Today, Glenn 0. Hawbaker, Inc. offers a full range of heavy-construction services, asphalt production, concrete construction, utility work and heavy-equipment rental. The company serves most of North-Central Pennsylvania from its branch locations in Pleasant Gap, DuBois, Turtlepoint, Milroy, Mill Hall, Montoursville and its State College headquarters. In February, 2001, Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. acquired its first out-of-state operation by purchasing the Erwin Aggregate Plant in Erwin, New York. The plant provides various types of gravel with yearly productions exceeding 150,000 tons. Although Glenn retired from the company in 1978, the company remains a family affair.
