Gottschalks is a regional department store chain headquartered in Fresno, California. German immigrant Emil Gottschalk, who described the business as "the store that cares", founded it in 1904. This remains the company motto. What began as a 10,000 square foot dry goods store in downtown Fresno has now grown into a chain with 63 department stores and 10 specialty stores throughout six western states: California, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Nevada. It is the largest independently owned department store chain based in California. Gottschalks' vision is to provide customers with quality, brand-name merchandise, a large selection, competitive prices and, above all, the best customer service in the business.
