The political, economic, and social aspects of Katrina
1. Introduction Disasters, whether man-made or natural, represent a "natural experiment" for social scientists. As one business leader put it to us on one of our first research trips in February 2006 to New Orleans after the storm, "Heck, I understand it is not every day that you can...
Globalization of Navy shipbuilding: a key to affordability for a new maritime strategy
The Navy states that 313 ships are necessary to support U.S. national security requirements. To build this fleet, the service is requesting a significant increase in its shipbuilding budget. Both the Government Accountability Office and the Congressional Budget Office contend that the Navy request underestimates true shipbuilding costs. Worse yet,...

Katrina aid is still being abused, U.S. investigators say

Olympics results not all downhill.(Intelligence)(Brief article)
BY MOST ACCOUNTS, the U.S. performance at the Torino Winter Olympics was disappointing. Ballyhooed skier Bode Miller failed to win a single medal, rival U.S. speed-skaters exchanged verbal swipes throughout the games, and other medal favorites fell, slipped, or skidded to defeat. But...

United States Comptroller General, David Walker, who is head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), spoke to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging in Washington, D.C. in December. His message about the country's financial condition and our dire long-term picture should be required reading for every American reports The Seattle Times. When introducing him, the conference chair called Walker a "straight shooter" and said his long tenure (a 15-year term that began in 1998) gives him an independence that's rare in government. He's going to need it. The picture he painted is beyond grim.
