GOW-MAC Instrument Co. (U.S.A.) was formed in 1935 by Mr. William Gow and Mr. James McFadden to exploit an automotive engine analyzer developed by Mr. Gow. This analyzer utilized a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) and essentially measured the carbon dioxide content of the exhaust gas. This development lead to the manufacturing of various binary gas analyzers; e.g., air in hydrogen, natural vs. manufactured gas, etc. During World War II the Company supplied analyzers to the U.S. Navy. GOW-MAC was incorporated in New Jersey in 1942. In 1946, Gow left the company and McFadden continued manufacturing instruments and thermal conductivity cells. By 1950, the firm had outgrown its plant in Newark, NJ and moved to Madison, NJ where it remained until 1978. During this period, the manufacturing of instruments and TCD's continued.     PALO ALTO, Calif.--BUSINESS WIRE--July 30, 1997--Hewlett-Packard Company and GOW-MAC Instrument Company today announced that they have signed an OEM agreement for the HP 6890 gas chromatograph GC system. The agreement allows GOW-MAC to privately label the GC with its own trademark. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
