Dow Jones Description

Gutchess Lumber began in 1904 when George Gutchess built the first mill on his Lapeer, NY farm. Powered by a wood-fired steam tractor, the mill supplied lumber for the farm communities of New York State's Southern Tier. Oxen and horses supplied the power in skidding logs to the mill and moving lumber to the customers. George's son Clair ("C.B.") Gutchess expanded the scope of the original business during his tenure. He operated a number of contract sawmills during the depression and was able to make small profits every year by expanding the customer base and developing a loyal, dedicated, hard-working team of employees. He overcame great changes in markets, business conditions and manufacturing techniques during his 53-year career in the hardwood lumber business. We're proud to say that Gutchess Lumber is still family-owned and operated today. Clearly, the Gutchess name stands for experience and excellence in northern hardwood lumber.
