Haights Cross Communications (White Plains, NY) was founded in 1997 by Peter J. Quandt. Mr. Quandt and Great Hill Partners (Boston, MA) were the principal investors. The company's mission was to become a significant publishing business dedicated to creating outstanding products. Since 1997, HCC has been active in acquiring companies that focus on the K-12 supplemental, medical education, and library markets. Almost all of its businesses have operating histories of more than twenty years and have established recognized brands and long-standing customer relationships in the markets they serve. The company's first acquisition of medical educational publisher, Oakstone Publishing (Birmingham, AL) took place in 1997. With the acquisition and integration of The Wellness Businesses in 1998, Oakstone Publishing produces titles primarily for continuing medical education in audio, print, and electronic formats. The first education company acquired by HCC was Newbridge Publishing (Northborough, MA and New York, NY) in 1997, followed by Sundance Publishing (Northborough, MA) in 1998, and Triumph Learning (New York, NY) in 1999. With the acquisitions of Buckle Down Publishing (Iowa City, IA) and Options Publishing (Merrimack, NH) in 2004, HCC continues to build share in supplementary publishing for the school market.
