Michael Behrendt was born on June 19th 1951 in Hamburg. He studied law at Hamburg university, ending his training at Hanseatisches Oberlandesgericht (Higher Regional Court), graduating by passing the "Assessor" examination in 1984. While a student, Michael Behrendt gained practical experience in various companies in the USA. He joined the legal department of VTG Vereinigte Tanklager und Transportmittel GmbH, becoming head of tank farm sales in 1987. He was appointed head of the tank farm division in 1990 and manager of VTG Vereinigte Tanklager und Transportmittel GmbH in 1994. In 1999, Michael Behrendt was appointed Executive Board Chairman of VTG-Lehnkering AG, which has meanwhile been sold, and a member of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG. He has been Chairman of the Executive Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG since January 1st 2002. Michael Behrendt was appointed to the TUI Executive Board responsible for the shipping division with effect from October 1st 2004. On 7th November 2005, with the acquisition of CP Ships, Michael Behrendt was appointed Chairman of their Board. On May 10th 2006 Michael Behrendt was appointed as ordinary member to the Executive Board of the TUI Group.
