Takahiko Ijichi was born July 15, 1952 in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. He graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Economics in March 1976 and joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) the following month. In January 2000, Mr. Ijichi was appointed general manager of the Finance Planning & Insurance Department, within the Finance Division, and assumed the additional role of deputy general manager of that division in June that year. Two and a half years later, in January 2003, he was made general manager of the Accounting Division. In June 2004, Mr. Ijichi became a managing officer, and in June 2008, a senior managing director. Mr. Ijichi intends to continue working under the basic philosophy of "doing that which should be done and not thinking anything special of it." He believes that this simple truth and selflessness will give TMC the ability to respond to change and give rise to its creativity. He believes that every day offers a new opportunity to each and every TMC employee to enjoy their work with a sense of enthusiasm, and in doing so, both individuals and the organization as a whole will continue to grow. Katsuaki Watanabe was born February 13, 1942 in Mie Prefecture, and grew up in Aichi Prefecture. He earned a degree in economics from Tokyo’s Keio University and joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) upon graduating in 1964. Mr. Watanabe has gained experience in a broad range of activities at Toyota, primarily in corporate planning and administrative affairs. He became the general manager of the Secretarial Division in 1988, and in 1989, became general manager of the Corporate Planning Division, where he participated in charting and communicating a common, long-term vision for Toyota operations around the world. Named to the Board of Directors in 1992, Mr. Watanabe continued to supervise work in production control, including supervising Toyota’s Motomachi Plant, which makes passenger cars. In 1999, Mr. Watanabe was appointed a senior managing director, and in 2001 he assumed the position of executive vice president. In June 2005, Mr. Watanabe assumed the position of president of TMC. A 1967 graduate of the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Law, Kyoji Sasazu joined Toyota in that year. He has spent most of his career performing marketing duties in Europe, and serving in Toyota's Japanese sales organization. A five-year assignment to Toyota's German sales subsidiary took Mr. Sasazu to Europe in 1988. During that time, he participated in building a sales network in the former East Germany. On returning to Japan in 1993, Mr. Sasazu's initial duties were in the Europe Division, where he became a general manager in 1994. His work in the Europe Division included coordinating Toyota's DUO channel for marketing Volkswagen and Audi cars in Japan. He moved to a Japanese sales division as general manager in 1996. Takeshi Uchiyamada joined Toyota in 1969 upon earning a degree in applied physics at Nagoya University. His early work at the company included participating in a project team that developed a numerically controlled cutting system for dies. He later took part in development work on technologies for reducing NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). In 1989, Mr. Uchiyamada became a department head in Toyota's newly established Product Evaluation and Engineering Division. Atsushi Niimi joined Toyota in 1971 upon earning a degree in aeronautical engineering from Nagoya University. He has fulfilled various responsibilities, however, production engineering has been a consistent theme in his career at Toyota. In 1995, Mr. Niimi became the general manager of a production management team responsible for putting new models into production. He became the general manager of Toyota's Production Control Division in 1997. Two years later, Mr. Niimi moved to the Production Engineering Management Division as a general manager. In all of these capacities, he always exemplified the Toyota tradition of commitment to optimizing the flow of activity in the manufacturing workplace. Iwao Nihashi was born February 16, 1950 in Mikkabi Town, Shizuoka Prefecture. He graduated from Numazu College of Technology’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in March 1970 and joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in April the same year. In January 2000, Mr. Nihashi was appointed general manager of the Production Engineering Planning Division’s Vehicle Department, and subsequently was made general manger of the Production Engineering Planning Division in June 2001. In June 2003, he was made a managing officer, and in June 2008, a senior managing director. The importance of manufacturing is being recognized anew to revive industrial competitiveness. To achieve this, it is necessary for production technology to be a step ahead of the field and for a strong group of engineers to guide this technology. Shinzo Kobuki joined Toyota in April 1972 after graduating from Kyushu University's Faculty of Engineering with a degree in power and machinery engineering. In June 1996, he was appointed general manager of Engine Design Department No. 24, Power Train Engineering Division 2, Vehicle Development Center 2 and project general manager of Engine Engineering Division 1, Power Train Development Center. Tadashi Arashima joined Toyota in April 1973 after graduating from Keio University's Faculty of Law in March that same year. In January 1997, he was made general manager of the Production Control Division's Control Department and, in January 1998, he was appointed general manager of the Europe & Africa Division's Marketing Department. In January 1999, he became general manager of the Europe & Africa Division. January 2000 saw him seconded to Toyota Motor Marketing Europe n.v./s.a., before returning to Japan and taking up the position of general manager at the Europe & Africa Operations Center's Europe Division in January 2003. Tadashi Yamashina was born May 8, 1951 in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture. He joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in March 1977 after graduating from the Waseda University Graduate School of Science and Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Yamashina was made project general manager of the Component & System Development Center’s Vehicle Engineering Division in January 1998, before being appointed general manager of Vehicle Evaluation & Engineering Division 2, Vehicle Development Center 2, in June of the same year. In January 2001, Mr. Yamashina moved to Toyota Technical Center, U.S.A., Inc. (TTC) as president, where he endeavored to raise TTC’s ability in planning and developing appealing products. In June 2003, he was made a managing officer at TMC, and in June 2004, he was assigned back to Japan where his new responsibilities entailed technical administration and development of fuel cell technologies. From June 2006, he was placed in charge of the Motor Sports Division and the Motorsport Business Management Department. In December 2006, he moved to Germany as vice chairman of Toyota Motorsport GmbH to strengthen the technical development and race strategy structures of Toyota’s Germany-based F1 team. Teiji Tachibana joined Toyota in 1969 after earning a degree in law from Kyoto University. Much of his career has centered on the legal and marketing fields. In 1994, Mr. Tachibana was appointed general manager of the Legal Division. One year later, in 1995, he became general manager of the Marketing Development Division. In 1997, he became general manager of the BR Tokyo Metropolitan Area Marketing Department, and in 1998, he was named general manager of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area Marketing Division. Yasuhiko Ichihashi was born March 22, 1952 in Konan City, Aichi Prefecture. He graduated from Gifu University's Faculty of Engineering with a degree in precision engineering in March 1974 and joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in April the same year. Mr. Ichihashi became a chief engineer in Vehicle Development Center 2 in January 1999. In June 2003, he was made a managing officer, and in June 2008, he became a senior managing director. Since the end of June 2003, the newly reorganized Research & Development Group continues to greatly enhance TMC's ability to devise market-creating concepts. In line with this re-organization in the Research & Development Group, Mr. Ichihashi continues to put his energy into developing stylish vehicles that strike a chord with customers and that exist in harmony with society and Earth. Yukitoshi “Yuki” Funo is chairman and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. He is also chief officer for The Americas Operations Group. Funo is charged with coordinating all Toyota companies in North and South America. A member of TMS’ board of directors, he chairs the company’s executive committee. He also serves as a senior managing director of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan. Funo joined Toyota in 1970 after earning a degree in business administration from Kobe University in Japan, and his career has centered on international operations. He has held a number of positions worldwide, most recently as president and CEO of TMS. He also has served as project general manager for the Asia, Oceania and Middle East planning division of TMC. In 1981, Funo began a five-year assignment in Australia as assistant to the president for Australian Motor Industries (AMI). He returned in 1988 as sales and marketing manager for the Australian organization. In 1997, Funo began his first assignment at TMS headquarters. Appointed senior vice president and chief coordinating officer, he was responsible for coordinating sales and planning activities for Toyota and Lexus. Funo returned to Japan in 2000, however, he continued to supervise Toyota’s operations in the Americas as director of TMC’s Americas Operations Center. Hiroshi Okuda was born December 29, 1932 in Mie Prefecture. He joined Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in 1955 upon earning a degree in business from Tokyo's Hitotsubashi University. After spending the first part of his career in the Accounting Division, Mr. Okuda was dispatched to Manila in 1972 to oversee Toyota's operations in the Philippines. He returned to Japan and became general manager of the Asia and Oceania Division in 1979. Named a director of the company in 1982, he supervised a full range of international operations, including preparations for the construction of major plants in Taiwan and North America. Mr. Okuda became a managing director in 1987, a senior managing director in 1988 and an executive vice president in 1992. He served as president from 1995 to 1999 and assumed duties as chairman from 1999 to 2006. As chairman, he was instrumental in furthering Toyota's localization and internationalization, as well as making it a worldwide leader in environmental initiatives. Shoichiro Toyoda, was born in 1925, and graduated from Nagoya University in 1947 with a degree in engineering. He joined Toyota in 1952 and later earned an engineering doctorate. His doctoral thesis centered on fuel injection. Dr. Toyoda became managing director at Toyota in 1961. After promotions to senior managing director in 1967 and executive vice president in 1972, he was named president of Toyota's marketing organization in 1981. Dr. Toyoda assumed the presidency of the newly integrated Toyota Motor Corporation, upon the merger of the sales and production organizations in 1982, and later served as chairman from 1992 to 1999. Dr. Toyoda became honorary chairman of Toyota in 1999. Automotive technology, quality control and factory management have been primary emphases for Dr. Toyoda throughout his career, and he received the Deming Prize in 1980 for his contributions to quality control. In 1984, he received Japan's prestigious Medal with Blue Ribbon for outstanding public service through business. Dr. Toyoda, who is a prominent spokesman for the automotive industry, has served as chairman of the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. He also has served as both vice chairman and chairman of the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (Keidanren), and currently serves as its honorary chairman. In 2002, he was awarded Grand Gordon of the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan and selected as honorary chairman of Nippon Keidanren. Katsuhiro Nakagawa was born March 11, 1942 in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture. After obtaining a degree in law from the University of Tokyo in 1965 he embarked upon a career at the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), now known as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Mr. Nakagawa's career at the ministry included two years at Harvard University, where he earned a master's degree in Public Administration at the JFK School of Government, three years as a representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in New York and extensive experience in setting and implementing ministry policy. In 1997, he became vice minister of International Affairs at MITI. In 1998, he retired from that post to become an advisor to The Tokio Marine & Fire Insurance Co., Ltd. In June 2001, Mr. Nakagawa was named to Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC)'s Board of Directors as a managing director. He became a senior managing director in 2002, an executive vice president in June 2003 and a vice chairman in June 2004. Mr. Nakagawa enjoys oil painting, qigong and playing golf.
