Alan is also committed to theatre-in-the-round, for which he has written the vast majority of his plays. It is always worth remembering that when he stages a play in London or any are performed in the proscenium arch, it is a step away from the author's original intention. It has frequently been stated that the definitive production of Alan's plays is the premiere production in the round in Scarborough. Alan has a close relationship with Scarborough, where he lives and has worked for most of his professional career. He has been artistic director of what is now the Stephen Joseph Theatre since 1972 and has premiered all but four plays (Christmas V Mastermind, Mr Whatnot, Jeeves and A Small Family Business) in Scarborough. More than half his plays have gone on to London to be produced in the West End or at the National Theatre. At one point in 1975, he held the record for having the most professional productions being performed simultaneously in the West End (The Norman Conquests, Absurd Person Singular and Absent Friends). His work has been translated into more than 35 languages and his plays are regularly performed throughout the world. He has received more than 25 awards and honours including an Olivier, a Moliere, the Variety Club of Great Britain Playwright of the Year and the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Lifetime Achievement Awards. The 1992 Cameron Mackintosh Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University, he is now Visiting Professor at the University of Hull. In 1994, he received a Montblanc de la Culture Award for Europe for 'establishing a thriving theatrical tradition in Scarborough and for his dedication and commitment to it'. In addition to holding a number of honorary degrees, he was appointed a CBE in 1987 and in 1997 was knighted for services to the theatre. Alan's plays have been regularly produced in America and more than 10 of his plays have been produced on Broadway and Off-Broadway. In 1975 he held the record of having the most plays simultaneously running on Broadway (The Norman Conquests and Absurd Person Singular) His greatest success in America came in 2005, when Alan took his Scarborough company to the 59E59 Theaters' Brits Off Broadway Festival to present Private Fears In Public Places. The month-long run was an unprecedented success receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. The New York Times proclaimed it "altogether wonderful" and the cast "flawless". In February 2006, Alan suffered a stroke but later that year was directing his new play If I Were You and co-directing a revival of Mr A's Amazing Maze Plays at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. In June 2007, he announced he was to step down as the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre and will officially leave the position in March 2009 **, but intends to continue to direct the premieres of his new plays and revivals at the theatre. In 2008, Alan will premiere the first new play he has written since his stroke, Life And Beth, and it will form part of a summer season also featuring his plays Haunting Julia and Snake In The Grass.

Andrew J. Pollard is Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immunity in the Department of Paediatrics, and Director of the Oxford Vaccine Centre at Oxford University. He is an Honorary Consultant Paediatrician at Oxford Children's Hospital, a Fellow of St Cross College and a Jenner Institute Investigator. He directs the largest paediatric vaccine clinical trials group in the UK, linked to his laboratory research group, which is located in the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine. He also works on serogroup B meningococcal vaccine development (group B meningococcal infection is the leading infectious cause of death in early childhood in the UK) and with collaborators in Oxford, Manchester and at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, which is planning a phase 1 trial of a novel meningococcal vaccine. In 2005, he established a research group at Patan Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, which studies vaccine preventable diseases in an urban setting in the country. The studies in Nepal highlighted the particular problem of typhoid in children. Professor Pollard has developed a bactericidal assay, which is being used to study population immunity in the country. In Oxford, in collaboration with the University of Maryland, the group is developing a typhoid challenge model to study pathogenesis of typhoid infection, examine the correlates of protection and evaluate new vaccines. Professor Pollard is also the director of an annual 3-day course held in Oxford, 'Hot topics in Infection and Immunity in Children' (widely known as 'the Oxford Course'), which has become a major feature in the annual calendar of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Disease and attracts more than 200 delegates every year. Building on the success of this course, an Oxford University Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Infectious Disease was launched in 2008. Professor Pollard obtained his medical degree at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1989 and trained in Paediatrics at Birmingham Children's Hospital. He specialised in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at St Mary's Hospital, London, and at British Columbia Children's Hospital, Canada. He obtained his PhD at St Mary's Hospital, London in 1999, studying immunity to Neisseria meningitidis in children, and proceeded to work on anti-bacterial innate immune responses in children in Canada before returning to his current position at the University of Oxford, in 2001. His publications include over 200 manuscripts and books.
Professor Andrew Smith is a Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Oxford. He helped with developing the Op Wall bromeliad research project in the Cusuco National Park in Honduras. His research interests are in the cellular and molecular basis of plant responses to environmental stress. This work includes studies of plant adaptations to arid, saline and metal-rich environments, especially at the level of transport and sequestration of metabolites and ions.
Dr. Angela Vincent is professor of Neuroimmunology and honorary consultant in immunology in the department of clinical neurology at University of Oxford. Qualified in London, and spent 10 years at University College London with Ricardo Miledi FRS studying acetylcholine receptors. Joined John Newsom-Davis FRS at the Royal Free Hospital in London and helped to establish a research group into myasthenia gravis. Moved to Oxford in 1988 and since 1998 has been head of the Neurosciences Group at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine. The group investigates autoimmune diseases of the nervous system, by a combination of molecular biology, immunochemistry, biochemistry, electrophysiology and immunology.

David Sherrington is Wykeham Professor of Physics Emeritus at the University of Oxford, having held extended appointments also in Manchester, La Jolla, London, Grenoble and Los Alamos. His research interests have been broadly based throughout Condensed Matter Theory; including metals, semiconductors, magnetism, superfluidity and especially statistical physics of complex systems in which combinations of microscopic disorder and frustration lead to interesting cooperative behaviour. A model that he introduced as a soluble spin glass is the highly-cited paradigm and the stimulus for the development of concepts and methodologies that have expanded throughout many examples of complex systems in many manifestations, in physical systems, computer and information science, biology, economics and social science. He holds Fellowships of the Institute of Physics, American Physical Society and The Royal Society. He gave the Royal Society's Bakerian Lecture (premier prize lecture in the physical sciences) in 2001 and was awarded the UK Institute of Physics Dirac Medal and Prize (premier award in theoretical physics) in 2007.
