David R. Haarz received his Bachelor's Degree from Oakland University with honors and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Michigan. Before practicing intellectual property law, Mr. Haarz practiced business and commercial law with a small law firm in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Haarz has practiced in the areas of trademark and unfair competition for over twenty-five years. During that time he has represented and counseled a variety of clients in developing and protecting their trademark portfolios. He was Trademark Counsel at Borden, Inc. where he was responsible for maintaining a world-wide portfolio consisting of over 6,000 registrations. Prior to joining Harness Dickey, he was a member in a general practice firm where he prosecuted, enforced and maintained the domestic and international trademarks for companies of various sizes. Mr. Haarz has had considerable experience handling Internet domain name trademark disputes and has more than ten reported decisions under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Procedure. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and is admitted to practice in the State of Ohio and the District of Columbia. Mr. Haarz has testified before Congressional subcommittees regarding pending trademark and patent legislation and is a frequent speaker at continuing educational seminars in the field of trademark practice.
Matthew L. Cutler's practice includes providing counseling and management relating to the intellectual property portfolios of a wide variety of clients. Additionally, Mr. Cutler devotes a significant amount of time to intellectual property litigation (having taken several cases to a jury trial) and litigation avoidance (including rendering of freedom to operate opinions). Mr. Cutler also has considerable experience counseling clients relating to trade secret issues; providing services relating to transactional issues, including licensing; and providing training programs for employees of clients. Edwin W. Bacon, Jr. holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Oakland University and a Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University Law School. At Oakland University, Mr. Bacon was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Electrical Engineering Honor Society and served as the President of the University's Student Chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Upon receiving his Bachelor Degree in 1992, he began a career with DaimlerChrysler Corporation as an engineer and worked in a number of diverse disciplines, including engine control software, analog and digital electronics design and manufacturing, and engineering leadership. Prior to working with DaimlerChrysler Corporation, he also worked for six years as a research technician in General Motors Research Labs and in Eaton Corporation's Research Laboratory. Mr. Bacon earned his Juris Doctor degree in the evening while working with DaimlerChrysler Corporation. In 2001, he began working with DaimlerChrysler Intellectual Capital Corporation where he primarily prepared and prosecuted patent applications for DaimlerChrysler Corporation and the Research and Technology division of DaimlerChrysler AG. He also investigated issues relating to patent validity and patent infringement, drafted agreements, and assisted in performing due diligence associated with the divestiture of a large manufacturing subsidiary. Mr. Bacon joined Harness Dickey in 2004, and he specializes in patent application preparation and prosecution in electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, and mechanical technologies. Ed is admitted to practice in Michigan and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Ms. Hoffman received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry from Wake Forest University in 2001, where she focused on inorganic chemistry, participating in a research fellowship on organometallic ligand chemistry. She also was a Poteat Scholar, a honorary scholarship for excellence in academics and community service. After graduating from Wake Forest University, Ms. Hoffman worked as a chemist for Alpharma, a generic pharmaceutical company, and Coca-Cola. Ms. Hoffman graduated from University of Richmond School of Law in 2005. Mr. Stobbs received his law degree from the Ohio State University in 1976 and a B.S.E.E summa cum laude from Ohio State in 1973. He is a principal of Harness Dickey specializing in computer law, computer hardware and software patents and litigation. His prior experience before joining Harness Dickey included work as a patent attorney for Sperry Corporation (Univac Computer), and as a prosecuting attorney in Ohio where he obtained extensive first chair civil and criminal jury trial experience. Mr. Stobbs is author of a leading patent law treatise, Software Patents published by John Wiley & Sons. The book contains an in depth treatment of computer software technology to assist the patent attorney. It explains how software patent protection can be obtained in the United States and throughout the world, and describes how the software patent can be integrated with copyright protection. Software patents of several major corporations, such as Microsoft and IBM, are analyzed, and special software technology problems of the future are explored. Mr. Stobbs also writes a monthly column, Software Practice News, for The Law Works, a nationally distributed magazine for the intellectual property attorney. Mr. Stobbs is an experienced computer user with extensive knowledge of IBM microcomputer system architecture and operation. G. Gregory Schivley brings a broad spectrum of expertise to the firm. With over twenty-five years of experience in intellectual property law, Mr. Schivley has been involved in numerous areas of the practice including litigation, obtaining patents and trademarks, and client counseling. He began his career in 1972 with General Motors and entered private practice after also serving on the patent staffs of UNISYS (Burroughs) and Xerox Corporations. Mr. Keane's patent prosecution experience is in mechanical, electro-mechanical, chemical, bio-chemical, pharmaceutical & bio-pharmaceutical fields, including development & issuance of over 500 U.S. patents in polymers, catalysts, super-conducting materials, electrostatic spray devices, dental instruments, ethical drugs & medical-treatment inventions. Mr. Keane has presented more than two dozen successful appellate briefs & oral arguments before the U.S. Patent Office & Court of Appeals Federal Circuit, including a trademark registration-cancellation appeal (Ilco v. Ideal Security, 188 USPQ 485) and often-cited case of In re Grabiak (226 USPQ 870) as to prima facie obviousness of oxygen-sulphur interchange in organic molecules.
Justin H. Purcell received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Oakland University and received his law degree from Wayne State University. Lisa M. DuRoss has practiced trademark and copyright law for over 19 years. Her practice is devoted to all phases of trademark and copyright procurement, licensing, maintenance and enforcement on a global basis. She joined Harness Dickey in 2000 and became an equity principal in 2004. Ms. DuRoss has been a frequent speaker on various intellectual property topics, including the Copyright Fair Use Doctrine in the educational arena. As an adjunct professor, she developed and taught a curriculum entitled "Protecting Your Ideas." She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and Dance from Mount Holyoke College and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Detroit School of Law (now University of Detroit Mercy). Admitted to practice to the Bar of the State of Michigan since 1986, Ms. DuRoss is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Elchert received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he focused on optics and instrumentation and his Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Joint Program of University of Memphis and University of Tennessee at Memphis. Mr. Elchert's thesis is titled "Clinical Based Instrumentation for Gait Analysis." Mr. Elchert graduated cum laude from Florida State University College of Law in 2003. Timothy D. MacIntyre is a principal who has been with the firm since 1996. Prior to joining Harness Dickey, Mr. MacIntyre earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctor Degree, magna cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School. William A. Ziehler earned a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and then completed graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he earned a Ph.D. in biological chemistry. He earned his Juris Doctorate magna cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law with a concentration in intellectual property law. Dr. Ziehler's graduate work focused on biochemical, biophysical, and genetic studies of nucleic acid and protein interactions, in particular those involved in catalytic RNA enzymes. His graduate studies produced several peer reviewed publications and in addition he has coauthored chapters for Current Protocols in Nucleic Acid Chemistry and Methods in Enzymology. Following his graduate work, Dr. Ziehler went on to a biotechnology company where he contributed to development of a novel means of whole genome amplification, including unique nucleic acid manipulations, that culminated in a pending U.S. patent application. Other aspects of Dr. Ziehler's history include managing corporate research projects and developing and instituting corporate IP management polices. He has taught undergraduate biochemistry courses and is the recipient of achievement awards in both law school and graduate school. These include receipt of the NIH funded Cellular Biotechnology Training Grant and the Rackham Pre-doctoral Fellowship while at the University of Michigan.
