The Hawkins story began in 1922 when Kenneth Hawkins and his brother Earl bid on and were awarded the construction contract for what is now Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1960, Kenneth and his son Fred incorporated the business into what is now Hawkins Construction Company. Some of their first major projects included the construction of the Omaha Missouri River Sewage Treatment Plant and the 63 bridge piers on I-480 in downtown Omaha. By the late 1960's, Hawkins Construction had gross revenue of over $23 million. Hawkins continued to grow in the 1970's completing the Northwestern Bell and Douglas County Civic Center high-rise buildings in downtown Omaha. The late 70's is when Hawkins ventured into major highway and bridge construction by completing the Kennedy Freeway in South Omaha. By time the 1980's came around, Hawkins was highly regarded as a prominent Midwestern Contracting Firm completing many of the areas most recognized buildings, highways and bridges. The 80's brought the need for expansion at Omaha's Eppley Airfield where Hawkins completed millions of dollars in work constructing a new parking garage, passenger terminal and runway expansion. In the 80's annual gross revenues rose in excess of $60 million. In the 1990's Hawkins ascended to the region's largest highway and bridge contractor completing the most prominent paving and bridge projects across the State of Nebraska.
