Henry Street Settlement

Lillian D. Wald, founder of the Visiting Nurse Service and the Henry Street Settlement, was a pioneer of the early twentieth-century reform movement. This biography tells the story of her life and career as an activist in the public health movement.

After 18 years of homelessness and substance abuse, David Miner, 42, has turned his life around. And he credits Henry Street with helping him make this remarkable transformation.

As a member of Actors Equity, AFTRA, and SAG, Joyce Griffen is a working actress, singer, and dancer. Her favorite theater performances were with the New Federal Theater. Ms. Griffen currently works as a Teaching Artist (in dance and theater) for the Lincoln Center Institute and the Henry Street Settlement, in addition to being a Columbia University School of the Arts, Writer's Guild of America East Foundation, Harlem Arts Alliance Screenwriting Workshop Fellow. Her first screenplay is entitled Po' Robin and Uncle Bay. She began directing at the request of famed playwright Ed Bullins, mounting one of his plays. Other directing credits include Rebecca Gillman's Spinning into Butter at the Schoolhouse Theater, Croton Falls, NY; Zora Speaks, by D. Kelsey at the Theater at Riverside Church; and her own, Formerly Known as Sarah, which was given a staged reading at the Museum of the City of New York, in the spring of 2008, and a full production at the Paul Robeson Theater, summer 2008, with Ms. Griffen in the lead role.

Maria Ruiz works with Volunteer Coordinator Bernadette Perrette, guiding corporate volunteer groups and individual volunteers through their tasks at Henry Street Settlement. "We couldn't do this without her," says Perrette. "She just never stops." Born in Bellevue Hospital, she grew up in the Lillian Wald Houses with her two brothers on the Lower East Side. At age 17, Maria began a series of tutoring jobs. Alternating weeks of school and work, she earned school credit and a stipend. Later she worked as a summer camp counselor at Lillian Wald Recreation Room at 12 Avenue D and supervised three interns.

Yoko attributes her success as a professional artist, in part, to the year she spent at Henry Street. Since that time, she has also received many prestigious awards, including a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Roy Korins is a co-founder of the firm and is the firm's Executive Partner and the head of its corporate department. Roy acts as general counsel and advisor to corporate, real estate, and other commercial clients who rely upon his long and varied experience to address their ongoing business and transactional needs. Clients include entrepreneurs, start-ups, and family businesses, as well as mature public and institutional companies. Roy also represents both domestic and international clients in mergers and acquisitions, private placements, public financings, and joint ventures and partnerships. Roy serves on the board of directors of a number of companies, as well as Henry Street Settlement, a not-for-profit corporation which for over a century has provided community services in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
