Ric Gale assumed the position of Idaho Power Vice President of Regulatory Affairs in March 2001. Gale has been with Idaho Power since 1983. Harry Cougher joined the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg and rapidly rose through a succession of positions to become manager of mining in 1977 and then vice president in 1981. With the closure of the Bunker Hill operation in 1983, he joined Pioneer Nuclear, Inc., a major uranium producer, as vice president of operations in Amarillo, Texas. In 1984, he was able to return to Idaho with Sunshine Mining Company, as manager of the nations largest silver mine. Since 1987, he has served as vice president and general manager of the Kellogg Division. As manager, he has responsibility for the integrated mining, ore concentrating and refining facilities. Currently, he serves as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Sunshine Mining and Refining Company. A 1966 graduate in mining engineering, Harry continues to be involved with the university. He has been a member of the COMER college advisory board for several years and has also helped sponsor mining engineering research projects with the college and the company. He has been an active member of the Idaho Mining Association and has been a trustee of the Northwest Mining Association. He was recognized as a member of the Ten Most Distinguished Alumni of the College of Mines during the 1989 University of Idaho's Commencement. He was also recognized by the State of Idaho with a Certificate of Commendation for service on the rescue team at the Sunshine Mine Fire in May 1972.

Albert W. Franzmann, of Soldotna, Alaska, is a 1971 graduate from the College of Natural Resources with a Doctor of Philosophy in forest science. In the late '60s and early '70s, Franzmann conducted research as at UI in the areas of environmental physiology and ecology of bighorn sheep in the Rocky Mountains. After his research stint on the Palouse, he became a wildlife research biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, director of the Kenai Moose Research Center and a professor of wildlife management at the University of Alaska. He is the founding member of the North American Moose Foundation. Franzmann is a member of numerous professional and support organizations along with business and community activities. Ed Galindo, a 1979 UI graduate, was the recipient of the Indian Teacher of the Year Award by the Indian School Board Association in 1991 and, most recently, in 2000. For last year's competition, he was chosen from a pool of more than 500 nationally recognized Indian tribes.

Grover D. Turnbow received his bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho in 1916, then went on to earn his master's degree at Iowa State in 1917. He was honored with a Doctor of Science degree from the UI in 1950. Turnbow was an internationally renowned industrialist and agriculturist. He was an instructor at Washington State University from 1917 to 1918. He then became a dairy professor at the University of California from 1920 to 1928. Two years later, Turnbow became the vice president and director of Creameries of America, then moved on to become the director and general manager of Golden State Co. and International Dairy Engineering Co. In 1953, he became president and director of Foremost Dairies, Inc. and was named chairman of the executive committee. Turnbow owned three large ranches in California, co-authored a book on the ice cream industry, made contributions to scientific publications, and is credited with the inventions of several dairy industry processes.

Harold Heady, an internationally-known range scientist and consultant, received his bachelor's degree in range management from the University of Idaho in 1938. Heady is emeritus professor of the University of California; charter member and past president of the Society for Range Management and author of "Rangeland Management," a major text used internationally for range management education. A native of Buhl, Heady traveled to New York State College of Forestry, and received a master's degree in 1940. He earned his doctorate in 1948 from the University of Nebraska. During his undergraduate years at UI, Heady was a member of the Associated Foresters, an inductee into Xi Sigma Pi, and an Idaho Forester staff member. Keith D. Watenpaugh is a leading chemical research scientist with Pharmacia & Upjohn Company. After attaining the rank of associate professor in the University of Washington Medical School, Watenpaugh was recruited by The Upjohn Company (now P&U) to lead a pioneering effort in structure-based drug design. Watenpaugh is recognized as one of the premier researchers in the fields of protein crystallography and structural biology. Robert Furgason graduated from the University of Idaho in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering, and later in 1958 with a Master of Science degree. He went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Northwestern University. Furgason has a long history at UI, starting as an instructor in 1957, then chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering (1965) and dean of the College of Engineering (1974). Robert L. Prestel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1959 and a Master of Mathematics in 1960 from the University of Idaho. Walt is the senior litigation attorney and partner for the Boise office of Holland & Hart - a 53-year-old, Denver-based law firm with more that 100 partners and more than 200 attorneys. Before then, his firm was Langroise Sullivan & Smylie. He was a trial lawyer with the firm beginning in 1972 until 1984 when it merged with Holland & Hart.
