Following graduation from Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Eickhoff had his internal medicine residency training at Boston City Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Infectious Disease fellowship training followed in the same location, under the tutelage of Dr. Maxwell Finland. After several years of experience in epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he joined the faculty at the University of Colorado in 1967. He served for 14 years as head of the infectious disease division, and subsequently became a chief of medicine at several affiliated hospitals, including Denver General Hospital and Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. In 1993, he returned to the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where his interests continue to be in the epidemiology and control of nosocomial infections, antibiotic therapy, influenza, and vaccines and adult immunization. Nationally, Dr. Eickhoff has been active as a consultant to the CDC in the Hospital Infections Program, and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. He has been a member of several advisory committees of the Food and Drug Administration, and continues to be a consultant to the Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products. He recently served as a member of the National Vaccines Advisory Committee, and was chairman of the Adult Immunization Subcommittee of NVAC. He served for many years as a member, and for 8 years as chairman of the American Hospital Association's Advisory Committee on Infections in Hospitals. In 1994, received the Trustee's Award for his service to that organization. He is a former secretary and past-president of both the Infectious Disease Society of America and the American Epidemiological Society. In 1995, he received the Maxwell Finland Lectureship Award of the IDSA. He also served as a member and subsequently as chairman of the Infectious Disease Test Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Eickhoff has also been active in the affairs of the American College of Physicians, having served on the Health and Public Policy Committee, and also as a member and subsequently chair of the Task Force on Adult Immunization, the committee that prepared The Guide for Adult Immunization. He has served on several committees of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has also served as a consultant to various members of the pharmaceutical industry.
