A Linear Up Trend in Spot Commodity Markets
Thomas MacLeod submits: The popular commodity indices such as the Goldman, Rogers, DJUBS, and CRB suggest that commodities are in a rather confused state. The “trends” are somewhat messy with no clear indication as to which way they are likely to break over the coming days. by Thomas MacLeod
Commodities Weekly: A Year-End Puzzle
A window-dressing by the Longs or investor redemptions after 8 months of historic rally? Year-end activities get farther away from fundamentals as “book-keeping” and “cash-flow” management of Funds hog limelight. This year’s unbelievable rally clouds the case even more. Despite relative calm in weekly close this week, many market participants...
Commodity Prices Have Plenty of Upside Potential
Calafia Beach Pundit submits: Commodity prices and gold prices continue to rise. This chart makes two important points: 1) in real terms, commodities are still quite cheap from an historical perspective, and 2) monetary policy plays a very important role in commodity prices. I've broken the past 40...
Commodities: The Best Is Yet to Come
Thomas MacLeod submits: Sometimes we feel like evangelists. Preaching passionate and fiery sermons, attempting to convert the unbelievers into the path of profitable trading. Blood alone moves history. - Martin Luther by Thomas MacLeod
Commodity Rally Remains Robust
Thomas MacLeod submits: It all seems so easy when things go your way but then almost without warning they turn on you with no apparent warning! Anyway getting straight to the point – has anything changed over the last few days to bring into question the rally in commodities and...

Commodities, in fact, traditionally yield positive returns in periods of high inflation, just as...
CRB vs. PPI: Cause and Effect
Thomas MacLeod submits: Yesterday PPI came in lower than expected giving an excuse to the deflationists to sell down anything commodity related and plunge blindly into US Treasuries! We found this behaviour somewhat amusing given the recent behaviour of the CRB (as in the old CRB – now...
The CRB Index Is About to Break Out in Non-USD Terms
An increase in the CRB index is not so surprising considering the rather steady decline of USD over the last few months. More interestingly though, let us look at how its is performing across a range of commodities. Were you aware that the CRB index had also reached multi-week highs...
Energy Will Lead the Next Commodity Shortage
James Quinn submits: This article originally appeared in the July, 2009 edition of the Casey Report. In 2008, prices of oil, natural gas, gold, silver, copper, corn, wheat, and most other commodities reached multi-year, and in some cases multi-decade, highs. They’ve fallen sharply since then, but commodities aren’t going out...
Commodities Prices Up 30%: Still Room for Upside
Calafia Beach Pundit submits: Spot prices on a range of basic industrial materials are up about 30% from their lows of last December, having now recovered a little more than half of what they lost last year. I like the parallels between the commodity price recovery and the...
