Ron Fairchild is executive director of the National Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University. Under Mr. Fairchild?s leadership since 2002, the Center has grown from a local program serving the children of Baltimore city, to become the only national organization focused exclusively on creating opportunities for high-quality summer learning for all young people. In 2007, the Center?s efforts led to more than $14 million in public investment in summer programming for youth. Mr. Fairchild?s strategic direction continues to drive the Center?s efforts to close the achievement gap between disadvantaged youth and their higher-income peers. Mr. Fairchild is widely recognized as an authority on the issues of summer learning. He speaks regularly on research-based approaches and models of effective summer learning programs. Benjamin Solomon Carson, Sr. had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream. But, today, he is the director of pediatric neurosurgery at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, a position he has held since 1984 at age 33. He is a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics. In 1987, Dr. Carson gained world-wide recognition as the principal surgeon in the 22-hour separation of the Binder Siamese twins from Germany. This was the first time occipital craniopagus twins had been separated with both surviving. The procedure employed hypothermic arrest (the deliberate lowering of body temperature) and circulatory arrest, as well as sophisti-cated surgical reconstructive techniques for success. In 1997, Dr. Carson was the primary surgeon in the team of South African and Zambian surgeons that separated type-2 vertical craniopagus twins (joined at the top of the head) in a 28-hour operation. It represents the first time such complexly joined twins have been separated with both remaining neurologically normal. He is noted for his use of cerebral hemispherectomy to control intractable seizures as well as for his work in craniofacial reconstructive surgery, achondroplasia (human dwarfism), and pediatric neuro-oncology (brain tumors). Dr. Carson is a recipient of numerous honors and awards including more than 20 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the American Academy of Achievement, the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and many other prestigious organizations. He sits on the board of directors of numerous organizations, including Kellogg Company, Costco Wholesale Corporation, the Yale Corporation which is the governing body of Yale University, and America's Promise. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he is a highly regarded and requested motivational speaker who has addressed varied audiences from high school graduations to the keynote address at the 1997 President's National Prayer Breakfast. He is president and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. He hopes this program will positively change the perception of high academic achievers among their peers across our nation.

Carrie grew up in the town of Skaneateles, NY. She graduated salutatorian from Skaneateles High School in 1984. From there, she went to the University of Rochester where she graduated magna cum laude earning a Bachelor's Degree with distinction in health and society and a minor in biology. Carrie attended the Sloan Program In Health and Human Services Administration at Cornell University, graduating with a Master's degree in 1990. Currently, Carrie works as Senior Finance Manager for the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute at Johns Hopkins University. Since her brother's murder in 1998, Carrie has been immersed in the pursuit of justice; engaged almost daily in the mutual support of other murder victim survivors; and has participated in campaigns to block the parole of murderers, argue for maximum sentencing, and promote policies and decisions that hold violent criminals accountable for their actions and make our communities safer. After her brother's murder, Carrie searched for reading material to help cope with the turmoil she was experiencing. The literature was sparse and inadequate. Most material spoke in sterile technical terms to mental health and criminal justice professionals without personally touching the hearts of those surviving the victim or those tangentially traumatized by murders in their community. Carrie wrote Aftermath to fill this void.

Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein is currently Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins University. He is also Director for the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins and co-Director of the ALS clinic at Johns Hopkins. He received his medical training, and PhD and research training at the University of Illinois and the University of Chicago. He trained in Neurology and Neuromuscular disease at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Rothstein is a neurologist and neurobiologist with a major commitment to investigations of mechanisms of neurodegeneration. He has been a strong proponent of the roles of excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, protein aggregation, and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of ALS. More specifically, he has proposed that abnormalities in glutamate transport contribute to the pathogenesis of cellular abnormalities that occur in motor neuron death. His laboratory studies the basic biology of membrane transporter, the cellular events that underlie regulation of transporters, and the development of novel drug- and cellular-based therapeutics targeted for both transporters and motor neuron death. He has developed both in vitro and in vivo models of motor neuron degeneration.

Angela T. Spinazze is an information architect, liaison, and bridge-builder between technology and cultural heritage communities. Her work focuses on smart approaches to managing the vast quantities of information that museums, archives, and cultural heritage organizations generate. Angela began her career in the Annual Programs Department of The Art Institute of Chicago where she produced direct mail campaigns, planned special events, and worked with volunteers. In 1991, her focus shifted to the collections side of the museum where she was part of the first comprehensive physical inventory team, a project that also included the design and development of the museum's first database of collections information. Angela managed the conversion of the index card file (representing approximately 150,000 works of art) into electronic format and she helped develop the application architecture and user interface. From 1993-1997, Angela served as Director of Marketing for a leading collections management systems developer. In this capacity, she managed all marketing and sales activities world-wide, co-developed two Windows-based applications for collections information management, and facilitated implementation and training programs. Angela founded ATSPIN consulting in 1997. Since then, she and a network of independent professionals, has worked with institutions worldwide on integrating technologies into the museum ecology to improve access to collections information for both staff and public audiences. Angela has worked with a variety of institutions, both large and small including the Walker Art Center, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Mystic Seaport, Quebec Museum Consortium, Este Court Archive, University of Notre Dame, Society of Architectural Historians, American Museum of the Moving Image, Haggerty Art Museum, and others. Angela led programming activities for the CIMI Consortium for several years. During that time she served as editor for several technical user guides produced by the Consortium for the museum community; she led professional development seminars on topics such as Dublin Core, digitization, and collection level description standards, and she ran the Handscape project that was among the first studies to examine the effectiveness of mobile devices in museums. In addition, Angela has written grants for online collections access projects, mentored young professionals, and managed projects for institutions that include the development of new policies for collections cataloguing, management, and related publishing efforts. Angela is an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins University where she teaches in the Museum Studies program. Angela received a Bachelors of Arts from Miami University in 1986 and a Masters of Arts in 19th-20th Century Art History, Theory and Criticism from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1992.

Katherine Needleman joined the Baltimore Symphony as principal oboe in 2003, the same year she won first prize at the International Double Reed Society's Gillet-Fox Competition. Since then, Ms. Needleman has been described as the "BSO's sterling principal oboist" and a "boon for the orchestra." The Washington Post has cited her "deliciously plaintive tone," the Baltimore Sun noted her "startling agility, endless breaths and prism of sonic colors" and her "unequalled dose of sentiment" was praised in Barcelona's La Vanguardia. In addition to her appearances with the BSO, Ms. Needleman has appeared as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the Haddonfield Symphony, and the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Colombia, among many others. She has appeared as guest principal oboist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony, and the New Zealand Symphony. Prior to her appointment in Baltimore, she was principal oboist of the Richmond Symphony and before that, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Ms. Needleman is a founding member of the oboe trio, Trio La Milpa; the woodwind quintet, Astral Winds; and the Mico Nonet, an improvisational ambient chamber music ensemble involving colleagues from the Philadelphia Orchestra and 1970's synthesizers. Ms. Needleman's other chamber music engagements have taken her to Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York; Jordan Hall and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston; the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. She has appeared at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, Italy's Spoleto Festival, the Alpenglow Festival, and the Newport Music Festival. A frequent participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, she has also appeared on two tours with "Musicians from Marlboro." Devoted to the music of our time, Ms. Needleman has premiered numerous works. She has commissioned works by Luis Prado, Chia-Yu Hsu, and David Ludwig. She gave the American premiere of Brenno Blauth's Concertino.

Mark is responsible for evaluating and developing strategic initiatives for the Company. In addition, he is particularly active in development activities and reviewing detailed annual operating plans of the Company and the respective properties. In 1965, Mark joined Builders Development and Service Company of Philadelphia. While employed there, he managed in excess of 1,500 apartment units in Pennsylvania and Delaware and developed over 700 new units along with two branch banks, a convenience food market, a 33,200 square foot supermarket and the first phase (200,000 square feet) of an enclosed regional mall shopping center. During this period, he also planned, zoned, developed and sold several hundred acres of land as tracts for single family housing. In June 1969, Mark formed The Rubenstein Company. The Rubenstein Company assumed the responsibility for the completion and future management of all the projects at his former employer that were still in the developmental stages at the time Mark left Builders Development and Service Company. The basic construction and bookkeeping staff of the former company joined The Rubenstein Company. In a measured program, over the last thirty years, the Company has developed into a full service real estate company with capacity for acquisition, development, construction, leasing, management and financing of substantial real estate projects. The Company also provides a full line of consulting services to major financial institutions covering both feasibility analysis of new projects, as well as workout services for under-performing properties. Mark received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1962. From 1962 to 1965, he studied and taught Theoretical Mechanics in the Graduate School at Johns Hopkins University, graduating with a Masters degree in Engineering. Mark acted as a consultant to government and industry during this period, with a strong emphasis on construction problems. He is currently a trustee at Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Huang is Senior Councilor for External Relations and Faculty Associate in Biology at the California Institute of Technology. She was previously Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School, and subsequently Dean for Science at New York University. She sits on the Boards of the Rockefeller Foundation, Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences, Waksman Foundation for Microbiology, and Public Agenda. She consults on science policy for government agencies in Singapore, Taiwan, and China as well as for the US. National Academy of Sciences and National Aeronautics & Space Agency. Dr. Huang is a distinguished virologist and proponent for women in science. The American Society for Microbiology gave her the Eli Lilly Award in Immunology and Microbiology (1977) and the Alice C. Evans Award (2001), She was elected President of that society for 1988-1989. She has honorary doctorates of science from Wheaton College, Mt. Holyoke College, and the Medical College of Pennsylvania. She served on the Board of Trustees of the AAAS, the Keystone Center, University of Massachusetts, and Shady Hill School. She is a fellow of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan (1991), American Women in Science (1998), the Academy of Microbiology, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1999). Her academic career began as Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School in 1971. During that time she also served as coordinator of the Virology Unit at the Channing Laboratories of Infectious Diseases at Boston City Hospital and Director of the training program funded by the National Cancer Institute on "Virus-Host Interactions in Cancer." She became full Professor at Harvard in 1979, as well as the Director of the Laboratories of Infectious Diseases at Children's Hospital in Boston. There she established a unit working on viral diseases of pediatric patients under a Geographic Medicine Center Grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. She also initiated an AIDS unit which was part of the NIH pediatric Clinical Trials Group. Her scientific contributions are many. As a graduate student she was the first to purify and characterize defective interfering (DI) viral particles. Her postulate that these mutants play a major role in viral pathogenesis stimulated work on many viral systems including plant viruses. Her postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute and MIT with David Baltimore on vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) uncovered a virion-associated RNA-dependent RNA polymerase which led the way to Baltimore's discovery of reverse transcriptase. Her research focused on the molecular characterization of VSV: its viral RNA species and regulatory mechanisms during replication. She was, also, the first to demonstrate that RNA and DNA enveloped viruses, including HIV and HSV, phenotypically mix their surface glycoproteins resulting in alterations of antigenicity and host range. Born in China, she grew up in the United States attending Episcopal girl's schools and Wellesley College. She received B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees (microbiology, 1966) from Johns Hopkins University. As an administrator Dr. Huang is particularly interested in interdisciplinary biological research, organization of higher educational institutions, and in policy issues related to science and technology. Since coming to Caltech, where her husband David Baltimore is the President, Dr. Huang has joined the Pacific Council on International Policy as well as other community organizations.
