Dow Jones Description
The story of Kalmbach Publishing begins with Albert Carpenter Kalmbach, who was one of the early pioneers of model railroading. He was born in 1910 in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and grew up in Milwaukee. At age 12, he purchased a small hand printing press, and a year later he started a neighborhood newspaper, The Milwaukee Sun. By the time he discontinued the paper to begin his college career at Marquette University, The Milwaukee Sun carried a substantial amount of advertising and boasted a circulation of 1,500. After graduating from Marquette University in 1932 with a Bachelor of Science degree, Al returned to what he knew best: printing. Bernice's degree in English and Journalism from Marquette proved valuable to the process, and the couple began working together in earnest in late 1933. Al was able to carry all 272 copies of Model Railroader magazine's first issue, dated January 1934, to the post office on the streetcar. By July of 1934, paid circulation passed the 1,000 mark. Circulation continued to grow steadily, and by 1937, Model Railroader was a profitable publication, its production...

Rob McGonigal joined Kalmbach Publishing Co. as an assistant editor of Trains magazine in 1993. He became editor of Classic Trains at its launch in 2000. A native of Philadelphia, he earned a B.A. degree in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1981 and moved to Milwaukee to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He worked at the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission before coming to Trains. Rob has had a lifelong interest in railroads. He credits his father with taking him on youthful trackside expeditions to see the Pennsylvania and Reading railroads. His first Trains subscription began with the April 1966 issue, when he was 7. He regrets being born too late to see steam in regular service, or to ride most of the great postwar passenger trains. His interests beyond railroading include Great Lakes steam vessels and historic roads such as the Lincoln Highway. He and his wife, Peg, live in a 1922 bungalow in Milwaukee.
