On McDonald's, Iceland and the Definition of Being Everywhere
Is McDonald's really everywhere? Well, it's no longer in Iceland. That story has attracted a ridiculous amount of media attention, but it looks like Lyst, the franchise owner there, made a pretty logical move. Apparently the three Iceland locations had "never been this busy before... but at the same time...
Downturn Spurs Subway to Grow Bigger Than McDonald's
Okay, okay, so Subway is nowhere near McDonald's size in terms of sales. But very soon, the sandwich chain could have more worldwide locations than its ubiquitous rival. Subway is close to 31,800 stores and is set to surpass McDonald's, with 32,158 locations, by the end of the year. ...
Food Companies More Responsible in the UK?
McDonald's eggs come exclusively from free-range chickens grown without antibiotics or genetically modified feed ingredients. In the UK, that is. In the U.S., it's a different story. And when McDonald's here started looking into different, potentially more humane ways of slaughtering chickens, who did...
It's National 'Pick On McDonald's' Week
In the mood for "talking smack" about McDonald's? Join the club. Carl's Jr. spent last week dissing the Big Mac and McDonald's new Angus burger, and now Burger King is "trash-talking McDonald's Double Cheeseburger." It's mostly a size war; both rivals say McDonald's makes puny products. CKE...
Can McDonald's Better Burger Compete?
As popular as McDonald's is, food-lovers don't generally argue that the chain's burgers are the best. They may be among the cheapest and the most convenient, but the highest quality? Not so much. That's more the territory of places like Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which make...
Is Starbucks Coffee Actually That Good?
Starbucks still has the lead in the coffee wars, but, with its McCafe assault, McDonald's is steadily gaining, according to recent analysis by BIGresearch. That should surprise nobody who's been following the companies and their increasingly heated battle. What might be a bit more surprising is that...
Food Roundup: McCafe-Starbucks Battle Goes To Europe, Pringles Not Chips, And More
McDonald's aims to overtake Starbucks in Europe -- McDonald's is expanding its McCafe across Europe, with plans to open hundreds of new stores by the end of the year. McDonald's has been thriving in the current economy, while rival Starbucks has been closing stores and struggling to keep up profits....
Food Roundup: Sara Lee Sues Over Hot Dog Ads, McDonald's Studies Eggs, and More
Sara Lee sues Oscar Mayer over hot dog claims -- The maker of Ball Park hot dogs is accusing Kraft's Oscar Mayer of false advertising because of an ad that claimed Oscar Mayer had beaten Ball Park hot dogs in a taste test, when in fact, it only beat out...
Food Roundup: PepsiAmericas Rejection, Cheese War Resolution, FDA Crackdown, and More
PepsiAmericas rejects PepsiCo -- The bottler turned down PepsiCo's bid to buy back the shares it doesn't already own, calling the offer "not acceptable" and "not in the best interest of the company’s shareholders." This followed a similar move by Pepsi Bottling earlier this week. PepsiCo had offered a combined...
Starbucks and McCafe Bring it On with New Ads
Has Starbucks given up on convincing consumers that the $4-latte is a myth? The message of the new ad campaign seems to be 'okay, so maybe we do sell $4-lattes. But we're worth it.' Some sample slogans: "Beware of a cheaper cup of coffee....
