Lahey Clinic

As chief operating officer, Dr. Kurtz is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Lahey Clinic and is the senior administrative leader. He also serves as chief medical officer; vice chair of the Clinic's Board of Governors, a body of physicians that serves as the executive leadership of the organization; and as a member of the Board of Trustees. For the past three years, Dr. Kurtz has managed Lahey's Internet based, high-risk patient population management program and written and presented its results. He has also developed programs that integrate clinic-based outpatient care management and community-based resource programs to improve health outcomes. Dr. Kurtz received his medical degree from the six-year medical program at the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at New England Deaconess Hospital and his internship at Boston City Hospital. Dr. Kurtz is currently chair of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA). In addition, he is past chair of the Steering Committee of the Group Practice Improvement Network (GPIN) and serves as chair of the Advisory Committee to the Trustees on Group Practice of the American Medical Association.

Darenna Rainsdon graduated from Idaho State University with a bachelor's degree in Communications / Journalism and a French minor. After deciding that, while she loves to write, the graphic production of a newspaper held more fascination, Darenna decided to get an advanced certificate in production design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Sometimes she wishes she had some sort of degree in web development, but when she started her career such was not available. Now she could teach the courses required, so why bother? Darenna started her career editing a small special-interest publication in Pocatello, ID, called the Blue Ribbon. She then moved to book publication for Boston-based Benchmark Productions where she used Quark Xpress and style sheets she designed to produce large technical books. A chance project turning a client's books into digital content using an early-but-proprietary software lead to teaching herself HTML and simple JavaScript and a job with Lahey Clinic as a web information architect. After spending seven years at Lahey Clinic, Darenna moved to Phoenix, AZ, and started Darenna Rainsdon, LLC. Her first client was her former employer, Lahey Clinic. She continues to maintain and build content for the public web site and for the Intranet, called Massnet. She has also sub-contracted for TecServ Inc and Mariani Professional Services. For TecServ, the project was assisting Gateway Community College in converting their entire web site into a Microsoft CMS that TecServ designed and built. For Mariani Professional Services, Darenna worked with the Arizona State Retirement System to design a template for their on-going conversion from internal Oracle Forms-based applications to Java web applications. At the same time, Darenna provided suggestions for the time when the public web site would be the focus. Along the way, she has acquired both hard and soft skills. She is an HTML and CSS expert. She knows her way around both Microsoft Active Server Page and Java developers. She can manage large and small projects. She can provide graphic design and production for web sites and print work. She is more than familiar with the Adobe Suite of products. In fact, back in 1999 when Adobe was developing the precursor to Image Ready, then called ImageStyler, Darenna served as a beta tester for the project. After a short stint at a prepress house, she can make Word and Acrobat do almost anything. And she can type 80 words per minute. Darenna is from Blackfoot, ID, by way of Boston, MA. She is currently based in Phoenix, AZ.

Fredric D. Gordon, MD, is a board certified Gastroenterologist, Medical Director of Liver Transplantation, and Director of Hepatology at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Massachusetts. Previously he was of Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at the New England Deaconess Hospital, Massachusetts. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the Deaconess Hospital, Massachusetts and received additional training in transplant hepatology at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. Dr. Gordon has published 130 articles, abstracts and reviews regarding liver transplantation and tertiary treatment of hepatic disease. He serves as a reviewer for a number of prestigious journals including JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. His research interests include: liver transplantation, hepatitis C, live donor adult liver transplantation, portal hypertension, and the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt procedure. He is the principle investigator for approximately 10 ongoing studies at the Lahey Clinic. Dr. Gordon is the national principle investigator for the PROTECT study examining the outcome of hepatitis C therapy after liver transplantation.

Bernard M. Gordon was our Chairman of the Board from 1969 to April 2004 and from November 8, 2006 through January 28, 2008, and was President from 1980 to 1995 and from October 2001 to April 2003. Mr. Gordon was our Executive Chairman from February 2002 to April 2004 and from November 2006 to May 2007, in which capacity he served as our Chairman of the Board and as our principal executive officer. Mr. Gordon served as our “Advisor to the President” from May 21, 2007 through July 31, 2007. Mr. Gordon was our Chief Executive Officer from 1973 to 2000 and from February 2002 to August 2003. Mr. Gordon is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Lahey Clinic. Mr. Gordon has been the Executive Chairman and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Neurologica Corp. since February 2005. From February 2004 to February 2005, he was that company’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, and from February 2004 to April 2006, he was its Chief Executive Officer. Neurologica Corp. develops and manufactures imaging equipment for neurological scanning applications.
