Frank Batten is retired chairman and CEO of the board of Landmark Communications Inc., a privately held media company based in Norfolk, Va. Batten stepped down on Jan. 1, 1998 when his son, Frank Batten Jr., became board chairman. Batten was born on Feb. 11, 1927, and was educated at Culver Military Academy, the University of Virginia and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II and later as a Naval reserve officer. Batten began his newspaper career as a newsroom copy boy and reporter during summer vacations. After college, he worked in the advertising and circulation departments of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star and became publisher of the newspapers in 1954. He became chairman of Landmark in 1967. Batten was a director of The Associated Press from 1975 to 1987, vice chairman from 1977 to 1981 and chairman from 1982 to 1987. He was a director of the Newspaper Association of America; the first rector of Old Dominion University; past vice chairman of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia; and past president of The Norfolk Academy. He was past president and campaign chairman for the Norfolk area United Fund and has served on the boards of the College of William and Mary, Hollins College, Culver Educational Foundation, The Darden School Foundation, Harvard Business School Publishing Co. and the Mariners Museum.

Mr. Garland has over 25 years of experience successfully building and managing advertising sales and marketing groups focused on Fortune 1000 level advertisers. Mr. Garland's experience includes 18 years with Landmark Communications. While with Landmark, Mr. Garland served as SVP of Sales for the Weather Channel and was responsible for the launch of Sales and Marketing for The Travel Channel and weather.com. During his tenure as SVP, The Weather Channel's annual revenue grew from $23 million to $154 million and The Travel Channel was successfully sold to Discovery Networks for $70 million. Subsequently, Mr. Garland was SVP of Sales and Marketing for Prime Point Media, an outdoor advertising company, which was sold. Most recently, Mr. Garland was SVP of Sales and Marketing for the launch of The Tennis Channel, one of the few successful independent cable network launches in the last 5 years. Mr. Garland's entrepreneurial skill set is evident from his having been a major contributor to the success of 5 start-up/early stage media companies. Mr. Garland has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from The University of Kentucky.

Kelvin King is a native VA Beach resident that settled here in a Navy family. He graduated from Bayside High School in 1974 and also graduated from Atlantic Christian College in 1978, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Kelvin comes to Capital Financial from a career with The Virginian-Pilot Newspaper, owned by Landmark Communications, Inc. As a Sales and Distribution Center Manager, he was responsible for the distribution of a brand new product to thousands of customer's doorsteps 365 days a year. The professional customer service knowledge he brings to Capital Financial is a valuable asset to not only a borrower, but also everyone he comes in contact with.

Dorothy Batten is Director of Landmark Communications, Inc., a company which operates the Weather Channel and other media and information businesses. She received a BA in economics and an MBA at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. She is actively involved at the University of Virginia's Batten Institute and at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, and is currently co-Chair of the Arts Council. Her goal is to encourage future leaders through education and the media to find positive, innovative and responsible solutions to the planet's environmental challenges.
