Brian Kardell joined Lee as manager of systems operations in 1991. He became director of information systems in 1995, chief information officer in 1997 and vice president in 2001, responsible for the company’s systems, data management, networks, telecommunications and application of technology. In 2003 his responsibilities were expanded to include major production processes and expenditures. Among recent accomplishments, Brian successfully leveraged a state-of-the art circulation system that we developed ourselves into a partnership with a major newspaper software vendor, and he and his team helped Lee pioneer the use of technology to streamline advertising orders. Before joining Lee, Brian was a systems development manager for Andersen Consulting. He is a member of the board of directors of the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament, Junior Achievement and the Newspaper Research Center in Oklahoma City, and is on the advisory board for the Computer Science Department at St. Ambrose University. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa.

Carl Schmidt joined Lee in 2001 as vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer. In addition, he serves as an operating vice president with responsibility for Lee’s newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Before joining Lee, he was senior vice president and chief financial officer, secretary and treasurer of Johnson Outdoors, a publicly traded member of the SC Johnson Wax group of companies, which he joined in 1994. He began his career in 1978 as a certified public accountant at the Big Four accounting firm of KPMG, LLP, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After a series of promotions, he became a partner in 1988, responsible for audits, mergers and acquisitions, public offerings and new business development. He is a graduate of Marquette University, where he serves on the advisory board of the College of Communication. In his career, he has worked with many industry, civic and charitable organizations, and currently also serves on the board of directors of the Inland Press Association and the Genesis Health Services Foundation.

Karen Guest joined Lee Enterprises in 2006 as vice president and chief legal officer. Her career includes more than 20 years of experience in management of corporate legal affairs, with 13 years as general counsel for a publishing company. Before joining Lee, she was general counsel of PAJ, Inc., in Dallas, Texas, since 2003. She previously served as vice president, general counsel and secretary of United Advertising Publications, Inc., in Dallas, a niche media, magazine and online publishing company, where she became a nationally known speaker on issues related to fair housing. She also previously operated a legal consulting practice, was general counsel and secretary of Hughes Homes, Inc., in Tacoma, Wash., and was an associate at Hackett, Beecher & Hart, a law firm in Seattle, Wash. She received a degree in biology-chemistry at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., and a law degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Washington State Bar Association, the Texas Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, the Corporate Counsel Association and the Dallas Corporate Counsel Association.

Dan Hayes joined Lee in 1969 at the Quad-City Times in Davenport, where he served as managing editor, executive editor and editor before moving to the corporate office in 1998. In his 29 years at the Times, he helped implement the world's first electronic production system and helped develop the Quad-City Times Bix 7 into a world-known road race. While he was editor, the newspaper received numerous honors, including the Inland Press Association Community Service Award. He began his career in 1966 at the Galesburg Register-Mail in Illinois. He has served as a discussion leader for the American Press Institute and is a past member of Mid-American Press Institute board of directors and the professional advisory board for the School of Journalism at the University of Iowa. He is a journalism graduate of Southern Illinois University and St. Ambrose Institute for Management Development.

Greg Veon, a 31-year veteran of Lee Enterprises, has direct or overall responsibility for 23 daily newspapers in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and South Carolina, as well as the Lee Agri-Media division. He began his career at the Chicago Tribune and joined Lee in 1976 as sales and marketing director at the Muscatine Journal in Iowa. He has since served as general manager of the La Crosse Tribune in Wisconsin; publisher of the Muscatine Journal; publisher of the Herald & Review in Decatur, Ill.; general manager of KOIN-TV, which was then a Lee station in Portland, Oregon; and Lee vice president for marketing. He became vice president for publishing in 1998. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and executive development programs at Stanford and the University of Michigan. He has been actively involved in community activities throughout his career, serving at the board and chair level for chambers of commerce, United Ways, economic development programs and many business, industry, social and educational support groups.

Greg Schermer joined Lee in 1989 and has led Lee's online expansion since 1998. He became a member of the board of directors in 2000 and also served as corporate counsel from 1989 to 2006. Before joining Lee and returning to Davenport, he was a partner at the law firm of Hanson, O'Brien, Birney and Butler in Washington, D.C. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Amherst College in Massachusetts and a juris doctorate degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska in 1980. He serves on the boards of directors of American Press Institute, CityXpress and the NAA New Horizon Watch Committee. He also serves on the board of Lee's subsidiary, Townnews.com, an online service provider to more than 1,500 community and weekly newspapers, and is a director of Madison Newspapers, Inc. Among community activities in Davenport, he is president of the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to serving as publisher of the Billings Gazette, Michael Gulledge has direct or overall responsibility for 20 daily newspapers in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. He joined Lee in 1983 as a college intern at The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale while earning a degree in journalism and advertising at Southern Illinois University. He was appointed advertising manager at The Southern in 1988 and in 1990 became advertising manager of the Herald & Review in Decatur, Illinois. In 1992 he became the advertising manager of the Quad-City Times in Davenport, Iowa. He returned to Decatur in 1997 as general manager, becoming publisher in 1998. In 2000, he was appointed publisher of the Billings Gazette. In 2002, he received group leadership responsibilities. He serves on several boards in the Billings area, including St. Vincent Hospital and Healthcare Board, Rocky Mountain College Board of Trustees, Montana State University - Billings Foundation Board, Big Sky Economic Development Authority Board, United Way Board of Directors and the ZooMontana Board. He also serves as chairman of the Montana Meth Project.

Paul Farrell joined Lee in April 2007 as vice president for sales and marketing. His career includes serving as senior vice president of advertising at The Providence Journal Co., advertising director for retail and national advertising at the Boston Globe, senior vice president of advertising for Community Newspapers in Boston and senior vice president of sales and marketing at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He also previously was director of sales and marketing at Miami Herald Publishing Company and was director of product marketing and advertising technologies at Atex, Inc., in Bedford, MA. He received a degree in marketing and finance from Providence College and a master's degree in business administration from Northeastern University in Boston. His industry and community service includes the board of the New England Newspaper Association, Boston Ad Club, the Boston Chapter of the Better Business Bureau and the Greater Boston Spinal Cord Association, the President's Council for Providence College, the Greater Providence Boys and Girls Club and Buttonhole Golf Club, an inner city course for underprivileged young people.

Suzanna Frank was appointed vice president-audience in March 2008, responsible for print and online audience growth efforts, market research and advertising sales support. She previously served as director of research and marketing. In 2005, she served two months as interim publisher of the Quad-City Times in Davenport, Iowa. Before joining Lee in 2003, she was market research manager for the San Diego Union-Tribune and was a senior consultant in marketing strategy at Kannon Consulting Inc. in Chicago. She has a degree in international relations from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston and a master's degree in business administration and marketing from DePaul University in Chicago. She is a member of Newspaper Association of America's Research Federation board of directors and is a frequent presenter at industry conferences.

Vytenis Kuraitis joined Lee in 1994 as director of human resources and became vice president in 1997. Before joining Lee, he was national practice director for executive compensation at Godwins Inc., an international human resources consulting firm. He previously was a principal and practice leader for human resources consulting at Arthur Young and Co. Before beginning his consulting career, he was manager of personnel planning and development at Leaseway Transportation Co. and director of compensation, benefits and international personnel for Nordson Corp., an international manufacturing company. He also has an extensive background as a human resources generalist. He is co-author of "Executive Compensation Answer Book" and author of several dozen compensation and training articles. He is a member of, and frequent speaker at, the Society for Human Resource Management and the American Compensation Association. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois. He serves on the American Press Institute board of directors.

Leonard J. Elmore, Esq. is currently Senior Counsel with the firm LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1987 and is believed to be the first (and only) NBA player to graduate from that prestigious institution. Len possesses over fourteen yours of experience in education and higher education governance. He served as President and CEO of Test University (TestU) responsible for the overall strategic, operational and fiscal direction of the company. Len is the President of Pivot Productions, Inc. a New York-based media and advertising company. In 1992, Len founded Precept Sports & Entertainment, Inc., a sports management and marketing company. Len also serves as a Director on the Board of 1 800 Flowers.com and several non-profit organizations, including The NBA Retired Players Association, where he was elected President in February 2005. Lauded as "the Thinking Fan's Analyst", Len is in his eleventh consecutive year as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. An All-American basketball player at the University of Maryland, 1971-74, he was a first round draft pick in both the ABA and the NBA where he played professional basketball for ten years. Len has written numerous articles and commentaries for National Public Radio, the Knight Ridder News Service, The Sports Business Journal and other prestigious media. He is also a coveted motivational and sports issues speaker.

William E. Mayer is a Managing Director of Source Companies, LLC. For forty years, Mr. Mayer has had a successful career in investment banking and financial advisory activities, as well as educational and philanthropic initiatives. He is well-known for the advisory guidance and transactional assistance he has provided to many significant business-owning families. He is experienced in matters related to corporate finance, public offerings, private equity, acquisitions and mergers, business governance, management team development, divestitures and exit planning. Mr. Mayer is also a Managing Director of de Visscher & Co., which is one of the Business Growth Alliance founding firms, the Senior Partner of Park Avenue Equity Partners, a private equity firm he founded in 1999, and a principal in Arrow Equity Advisors, LLC. Continuing his long-term innovation in the capital markets, with both Park Avenue and Arrow Equity Advisors, Mr. Mayer has now created new private equity business models to provide greater long-term capital support and innovative ownership structures for family-owned and closely-held medium sized business. From 1997 until the formation of Park Avenue, Mr. Mayer was a founding Partner of Development Capital, which invested in private and public companies. From 1992 until December 1996, Mr. Mayer was a professor and Dean of the College of Business and Management at the University of Maryland. From 1991 to 1992, he served as a professor and Dean of the Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester. Until January 1991, Mr. Mayer worked for The First Boston Corporation (now Credit Suisse), a major global investment bank. During Mr. Mayer's 23 year career at First Boston, he held numerous management positions including President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Mayer is currently a board member of the following public companies: Lee Enterprises, Reader's Digest, and is a trustee of the Columbia Group of Mutual Funds. Over the past 25 years, he has been a board member of numerous other public and private companies. Mr. Mayer was Chairman of the Aspen Institute for six years. He stepped down as chair in September 2006 and is currently on its Executive Committee. In July 2006, Mr. Mayer became Chairman of the Board of the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. Mr. Mayer was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He holds a BS and an MBA from the University of Maryland.
