With the acquisition of Pulitzer Inc. in June 2005, Lee became the fourth largest newspaper company in the country in terms of dailies owned, and grew from 12th to seventh largest in terms of total daily circulation. Brian Kardell joined Lee as manager of systems operations in 1991. He became director of information systems in 1995, chief information officer in 1997 and vice president in 2001, responsible for the company’s systems, data management, networks, telecommunications and application of technology. In 2003 his responsibilities were expanded to include major production processes and expenditures. Among recent accomplishments, Brian successfully leveraged a state-of-the art circulation system that we developed ourselves into a partnership with a major newspaper software vendor, and he and his team helped Lee pioneer the use of technology to streamline advertising orders. Before joining Lee, Brian was a systems development manager for Andersen Consulting. He is a member of the board of directors of the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament, Junior Achievement and the Newspaper Research Center in Oklahoma City, and is on the advisory board for the Computer Science Department at St. Ambrose University. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa.

Carl Schmidt joined Lee in 2001 as vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer. In addition, he serves as an operating vice president with responsibility for Lee’s newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Before joining Lee, he was senior vice president and chief financial officer, secretary and treasurer of Johnson Outdoors, a publicly traded member of the SC Johnson Wax group of companies, which he joined in 1994. Karen Guest joined Lee Enterprises in 2006 as vice president and chief legal officer. Dan Hayes joined Lee in 1969 at the Quad-City Times in Davenport, where he served as managing editor, executive editor and editor before moving to the corporate office in 1998. In his 29 years at the Times, he helped implement the world's first electronic production system and helped develop the Quad-City Times Bix 7 into a world-known road race. While he was editor, the newspaper received numerous honors, including the Inland Press Association Community Service Award. He began his career in 1966 at the Galesburg Register-Mail in Illinois. Greg Veon, a 31-year veteran of Lee Enterprises, has direct or overall responsibility for 23 daily newspapers in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and South Carolina, as well as the Lee Agri-Media division. In addition to serving as publisher of the Billings Gazette, Michael Gulledge has direct or overall responsibility for 20 daily newspapers in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
