"Lake Superior Software" was founded in 1982 to develop and support physician billing and practice management software. The company quickly attracted a national clientele and opened an office just outside Minneapolis in the mid-1980s, thereafter to be known as "LSS Data Systems." LSS began by developing a PC-based system in response to an existing client's desire to accommodate billing for their affiliated physician community. Beginning in 1990, this system was redeveloped, enhanced, and re-written utilizing programming technologies developed by Medical Information Technology, Inc. (MEDITECH). LSS began development of its Client/Server system in 1996 and has witnessed consistent growth in both the MAGIC and Client/Server platforms ever since. In 2000, LSS complemented its industry-leading billing and practice management system with the release of its Electronic Ambulatory Record (EAR), an on-line patient clinical record with medical problem list functionality. In 2001, the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Soweto, South Africa went live with software donated by LSS, and additional sites in southern Africa have since gone live as well. North Country Regional Hospital piloted domestic use of LSS clinical applications in 2001. The Medical and Practice Management (MPM) Suite, a full-featured ambulatory care solution co-developed by LSS and MEDITECH for physicians and other healthcare professionals, was released in 2002.
