Madrona Medical Group was formed in 1995 from existing, independent groups of physicians practicing in Whatcom County. The formation of Madrona was, in part, a response to a rapidly changing healthcare delivery system. That system was reacting to increased costs by imposing administrative burdens on physicians, and restrictions on patients' access to procedures and treatments. The formation of an integrated medical group was a response that allowed us to keep the patient-physician relationship as the focus of modern healthcare. We planned on creating an organization that would provide cost-efficient, seamless, and effective health care to the citizens of Whatcom County. This would allow us to both improve support of physicians and, at the same time, improve the quality of care delivered through integration of services and innovation of new forms of care. Initially, the physicians continued to practice in their own offices, scattered throughout the community. In 1999, Madrona Medical Group moved into a modern medical facility of approximately 70,000 square feet, located on Cordata Parkway. Consolidation into a single site improved patient convenience by bringing all of our healthcare services together. As Chief Executive Officer of Madrona Medical Group, Dr. Erick Laine is both a physician and a leader in modern healthcare. For many years he served in several administrative positions while practicing full-time clinical medicine. In 2000 he left clinical practice to assume a full-time administrative position as CEO. His background as a physician and as an administrator keeps him committed to balancing the many demands of a challenging healthcare environment. His goal is to assist Madrona Medical Group in providing patients with the highest standard of healthcare in a way that is sustainable for physicians, nurses and the community. Because healthcare itself requires a healthy system, Dr. Laine is involved in healthcare issues at the local, state and national level.

Dr. Donald Berry has been practicing Pulmonology for more than ten years and is certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine. In 1971, he received his BA at Haverford College, Pennsylvania followed by his Doctor of Medicine in 1979 at Stony Brook University, New York. You will find that Dr. Berry is very active in the medical community - he is currenty the director of the Critical Care Unit and Respiratory Care at St. Joseph Hospital since 1998 and a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at St. Joseph Hospital since 2001. He is also a member of the Pulmonary Team and Clinical Research department at Madrona who have been actively involved in research studies to help better define optimal treatment for patients with lung disease. Dr. Berry grew up in New England but has made Whatcom County his home with his wife and children since 1985. In his free time, you might find Dr. Berry golfing, skiing, fly fishing, hiking with his dog or listening to classical music. He also enjoys photography.

Madrona Medical Group is pleased to welcome its second Family Practitioner, Dr. Martin Piatt to the team. Prior to joining Madrona Medical Group, Dr. Piatt worked for 11 years providing Family Practice to local residents and visitors at Hawaii Family Medical Center, in Waikoloa, Hawaii. Coming from an office with only two physicians, including himself, Dr. Piatt stated he is excited to practice with a larger group of primary care and sub-specialty physicians who show a real sense of camaraderie. In 1986, Dr. Piatt received his doctorate from Michigan State University. Upon completion, he began his internship at Edward Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. He later completed his residency in Grand Rapids Family Practice Residency Program at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Piatt is board-certified with the American Board of Family Practitioners. He and his wife, along with their two dogs, are looking forward to living in a city with such a tight-knit community, that is near the water and mountains. Dr. Piatt is a big sports enthusiast. He especially likes softball and basketball and enjoys watching college and professional sports. His other interests include reading, watching movies, traveling, and going on walks with his wife and their dogs.
