Our legacy began in 1919 when Floyd L. Maines, Sr. founded Maines Candy Company and sold nickel candy to local grocers. The average order was $20 and first-year sales were $30,000. In 1947, Floyd L. Maines, Jr. joined the family business after serving five years in the Navy. While his first choice was the FBI, his father convinced him to join Maines Candy Company. Floyd Jr. expanded into fountain supplies, toys, and paper products. Together with a group of salesmen, Maines Candy Company grew the business four-fold. Floyd Jr.'s sons, David and Bill, joined the family business in 1970 and 1978 respectively. They took the business into foodservice and extended the product offerings to include frozen and canned goods, beverage items and cleaning chemicals. With this product line expansion, the company name was changed to Maines Paper & Food Service, Inc. Maines began pursuing the casual dining segment of the industry which powered the company's growth through the 1980s. By the mid-1980s, Maines earned a ranking of 43 in Institutional Distributor magazine's Top 50 Food Distributors in the Nation. In 1984, the Maines Cash & Carry store was opened to serve both independent operators and the public in a retail capacity. Today, the four MaineSource retail locations stock a wide variety of dry, frozen, and fresh food items as well as cleaning chemicals, smallwares, and party goods.
