Mary Jane Jamar is vice president of Human Resources Management at MSH. Her department is responsible for recruitment in the Cambridge and Arlington offices, as well as for all international projects. Ms. Jamar joined MSH in 2006 and has 20 years of experience in human resources management, most recently with the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC. Through WWF, she carried out human resources work in nearly 20 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Ms. Jamar received her master's degree in human resources management from George Washington University and her bachelor of arts cum laude from Mount Holyoke.

Sue J. Goldie is a professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management and director of the Program in Health Decision Science at the Harvard School of Public Health. Trained as a physician, decision scientist, and public health researcher, she is best known for bringing together a wide variety of disciplinary approaches to address critical global health challenges. She is the recipient of a MacArthur award, has published more than 100 original research papers, serves on several international committees that influence health policy, and has received numerous teaching and mentorship awards.

Dr Sediqa Hofiani is the Community Health Worker (CHW) Training Manager on the REACH Program. The following e-interview with Rachael Woloszyn describes Sediqa's unique experience as a CHW Training Manager and provides insight into the role of a Community Health Worker in Afghanistan.

Asociacion Pro-Bienestar de la Familia (APROFAM) provides a wide variety of services related to family planning (FP), reproductive health (RH), maternal and child health, laboratory testing, and other basic health programs throughout Guatemala. APROFAM's target population is the lower- and lower-middle classes. Its urban program includes 32 clinics spread throughout the country and its Rural Development Program (RDP) serves some of the country's poorest, including the majority indigenous Mayan population in the highlands. With a 35-year history as the country's principal FP/RH agency, APROFAM has significantly improved Guatemala's access to family planning. APROFAM is the International Planned Parenthood Foundation (IPPF) affiliate in Guatemala. It has also received substantial financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Karen Hays, a dedicated certified nurse midwife working with JHPEIGO, left her home in Seattle to help train physicians and midwives as part of Management Sciences for Health's USAID-funded REACH program in Afghanistan. However, nothing could have prepared Hays for the experience awaiting her in Jalalabad, where she was on assignment working with International Medical Corp's (IMC) Midwifery Training School and supporting continuing education at Jalalabad's University Hospital. Sparked by the Newsweek Magazine report that soldiers had flushed a copy of the Koran down the toilet at Guantanamo Bay, enraged citizens in Jalalabad stormed the streets, targeting foreigners and international aid organization workers. Undeterred by danger and violence, Hays couragously assisted her patients and enlisted in the help of gracious Afghans who brought her to safety.

In the following interview, Miho Sato explains the work of the REACH Gender Unit, which she heads. In Afghanistan, where under the Taliban, women were denied the most basic human rights, Sato, Dr. Rahila Juya and Dr. Sharifullah Haqmal have traveled to 12 USAID priority provinces to hold gender awareness training for NGO staff, educators, and officials. Their work has been greeted with enthusiasm by both men and women in rural Afghanistan.

At the close of the 20th century, the world of philanthropy faces two very significant realities: (1) an imminent large-scale intergenerational transfer of wealth, and (2) a prolonged slump in charitable giving in the United States. In light of both factors, the role of the advisor in philanthropy is powerfully strategic. Karoff, president of The Philanthropic Initiative, argues that advisors to the wealthy have been far too narrow in perspective, usually giving counsel only in terms of effective tax planning. Karoff pleads instead for a "strategic philanthropy" that considers such crucial factors as the goal of empowerment, a posture of pro-activity, donor involvement and competence, and the significance of a donor's religious and moral values. He further suggests a "philanthropic curve" of donor development, characterized by increasing donor involvement in the giving process and by the alignment of the donor's values with his giving. Karoff issues a call for philanthropic advisors to frame the issue in this deeper and broader scope.

Mr. Carr, 64, has served as a Director since 2006. Mr. Carr is a member of the Executive Committee of the Corporation and a Director and member of the Executive Committee of the Bank. He is also a member of the Compensation and Option Committee of the Corporation and the Nominating Committee of the Corporation. Mr. Carr retired as partner of Goodwin Procter LLP in 2004. He is a Director of Management Sciences for Health, the Concord Museum, and CC Pools, Inc.
