Ian Davis is McKinsey's tenth managing director. A British national, Ian has been with the firm for more than 25 years and was formerly head of McKinsey's London office. Although he remains based in London, Ian spends a significant amount of time travelling to visit McKinsey offices and clients around the world. Speaking about his role, Ian has said, "A managing director is a servant leader: elected, not appointed. The managing director role reflects the contrasts between a partnership and a corporation. To me, one of the joys of being a private partnership is that we can set our own objectives and metrics, consistent with our values. I believe that the firm's strategy and direction are deeply embedded in our mission and values . My primary focus is on the future health of the firm, rather than short-term performance." As McKinsey's leader, Ian challenges firm members to think about and embrace Distinctiveness, Values and Innovation in all that they do. These are his three priority themes, outlined in 2003, his first year as managing director. Ian defines 'distinctiveness' as the aspiration that in everything we do people will say, "Only McKinsey could do that." The quest for innovation is a charge by Ian to experiment more and try new ideas and approaches to client service so that the firm remains fresh, vibrant, and relevant to our clients. Ian emphasizes the importance of knowledge development by publishing articles in external publications a couple times a year. Recently authored pieces from the Financial Times and The Economist are available below.

Kaihan Krippendorff, the author of The Art of the Advantage: 36 Strategies to Seize the Competitive Edge (Thomson TEXERE 2003), helps individuals and organizations unleash strategic creativity and growth. He shows that our typical problem-solving approaches unnecessarily limit our options and that, by adding a fundamentally different, creative approach to their toolkits, corporate decision-makers can expand their thinking outside of the box to more consistently outthink, outmaneuver, and outperform the competition. By blending the disciplines of competitive strategy, innovation, cognition, and Eastern philosophy he rouses innovation throughout organizations. He has worked numerous small, medium, and large companies including Microsoft, Starbucks, and DHL. A former consultant and manager at McKinsey & Company, Kaihan has held various senior management positions in the consulting, investment banking, and retail sectors. He earned his MBA from Columbia Business School and London Business School, his BSE in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and his BSE in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering. He lives in Miami, Florida where he writes, teaches entrepreneurship, and runs The Strategy Learning Center, an executive education firm.

Born and raised in North St. Louis County, Julie earned a Bachelors degree with a double major in English and Film Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Before heading off to graduate school, Julie temped at the Anheuser Busch, National Supermarkets, Contico, Whirlpool, Brod Dugan, Monsanto, and many other St. Louis corporations. Since earning her MFA in 1998, Julie has worked as an administrative assistant and the wind beneath many wings at McKinsey & Company, LRN, and now Google. She resides in Los Angeles and is actively seeking a publisher for her darkly comic first novel, Earth City, which follows the year in the life of a girl who graduates from college, moves back home to St. Louis, temps, sings karaoke and dates a Steve Perry impersonator in a Journey cover band. Julie's short stories include: "Burning Crayons," about a Catholic school May Queen whose spotlight is stolen when her little sister contracts the stigmata; "Things That Are Cold", about a losing contestant on The $20,000 Pyramid who seeks revenge on his dumb celebrity partner; "Mopping Irma", about spontaneous combustion and the mess it leaves behind; and "Holyland Mambo", when your dad is a Satanist, hilarity ensues. She and Nerdia co-authored St. Lou Haiku, published by Timberline Press in 2004. Julie has published television reviews in Time Out New York, fiction in Air in the Paragraph Line, a cartoon in Golden Greats: Cher Zine 2, and essays in Hermenaut, Road Trip, Notre Dame Magazine's online edition, and Temp4-7.com. She also writes a baseball blog - Cardinal Girl - that was named "local blog of the week by The Riverfront Times. The pseudonym of Coolia comes from the rap artist Coolio. Because Julie is the cool cat of Ape Culture, on top of every trend and retrospect, Julie became know in her circle of friends as Coolia.

Tim Welsh, a Principal of McKinsey & Company, stops asking questions when the matter needs an immediate response or he simply runs out of time. If an organizational rule or guideline is breached, for example, he feels it should be addressed quickly. In that instance, questions might be used to establish the reason for the breach, but a quick and firm decision ensures the rule or guideline is upheld in the future.
