Decision Makers
Board of Directors
Since MPT's founding in August 2003, Edward K. Aldag, Jr. has served as chairman, president and chief executive officer. The company was born from Aldag's vision to create a new kind of hospital-focused healthcare REIT that combines healthcare finance, real estate and operations expertise.
In 2002, having recently sold his interest in two private real estate companies - Guilford Capital Corp. and Guilford Medical Properties, Inc., with aggregate assets valued at more than $500 million - he spent 18 months assembling a top-notch management team that would not only embrace his vision for a new way of doing business in an evolving healthcare climate, but also help shape the company's path with each team member's own unique perspectives and approaches.
"The world certainly didn't need another company investing only in nursing homes and medical office buildings," Aldag said. Instead, he envisioned a real estate investment trust specializing in acute care hospitals and rehabilitation facilities that offers cash-strapped owner-operators access to capital.
Aldag earned his bachelor's degree in commerce and business - with a major in corporate finance - from the University of Alabama in 1986. His 15-year tenure with Guilford Capital Corporation and Guilford Properties Trust, Inc. began that same year. There he played an integral role in the formation of investor groups, structuring the financing, and closing the transactions. Guilford Medical Properties owned numerous rehabilitation hospitals across the country and net-leased them to four different national healthcare providers. Aldag served as president and a member of the board of directors of Guilford Medical Properties, Inc. from its inception until selling his interest in the company in 2001. Mr. Aldag was the president and a member of the board of directors of Guilford Capital from 1990 to 2001, serving as executive vice president, chief operating officer and a member of the board of directors.
