Dr. Iwaki holds three professorships at the University of Southern California School of Medicine in the Departments of Urology, Surgery and Pathology and has been Director of the Transplantation Immunology and Immunogenetic Laboratory since 1992. He is also a visiting professor at the Nihon University School of Medicine, Kyushu University and the Tokyo Women's Medical School in Japan. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Dr. Iwaki held professorships at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in the Departments of Surgery and Pathology from 1989 through 1991. He received both his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Sapporo Medical School in Sapporo, Japan. Dr. Iwaki is the author of 200 peer-reviewed publications and more than 40 books. Dr. Locke has 20 years experience in drug discovery, preclinical and early clinical development. Dr. Locke was formerly Vice President of Research at Tanabe Research Laboratories U.S.A., Inc. (TRL). Prior to joining TRL, Dr. Locke served as Executive Director, Preclinical Development at Interneuron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He joined Interneuron in 1989 as Manager, Behavioral Neuroscience, taking on positions of increasing responsibility over the next 11 years. Earlier in his career, Dr. Locke headed Hoechst-Roussel Pharmaceuticals' laboratories for analgesics and anti-inflammatory research as well as Alzheimer's disease. From 2002 until early 2004, Mr. Anderson was an advisor and consultant to MontRidge, LLC, an investor relations firm specializing in biotechnology. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Cognetix, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company in Salt Lake City, UT, from 1998 to 2002. Earlier, he was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Development at Interneuron (now Indevus) Pharmaceuticals and from 1987 until 1995 he held various executive positions in marketing, strategic planning and business development at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Mr. Anderson began his career in the pharmaceutical industry with the Upjohn Company of Canada, where he progressed through a series of sales, sales management and marketing management assignments. Arlene Morris brings significant expertise in the establishment of strategic partnerships, marketing and operations to MediciNova. She was appointed President and CEO of Affymax, Inc. in June 2003. She has over 25 years of management experience from Johnson & Johnson, Scios Inc., Coulter Pharmaceutical, Inc. and Clearview Projects. While at Coulter, she completed numerous transactions, including the $1.0 billion merger between Coulter and Corixa and a contractual joint venture with GlaxoSmithKline for Bexxar® valued in excess of $200 million. Previously, Ms. Morris was the Vice President of Business Development at Scios Inc. where she completed several high profile transactions including one of the first biotech profit-sharing deals for a late-stage product. From 1977 through 1993, Ms. Morris held various management and executive positions at Johnson & Johnson in sales, marketing, new product development and business development, holding the position of Vice President of Business Development for McNeil Pharmaceutical from 1988 to 1993. She received her B.A. degree in Biology and Chemistry from Carlow College and studied marketing at Western New England College. Daniel Vapnek, PhD, is currently an adjunct professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has played an influential role in biotechnology in both academics and industry. For 16 years, Dr. Vapnek was the head of research at Amgen, the world's largest biotechnology company. He joined Amgen in 1981 as the director of research when the company had 36 employees, and rose to senior vice president of research by 1988. When he retired in 1997, the company had more than 5,000 employees worldwide and revenues of $2.4 billion. While at Amgen, Dr. Vapnek worked closely with Philip Whitcome, PhD, Amgen's former director of strategic planning and also one of its first employees.
