Bill Hawkins assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of Medtronic, Inc. in August 2007 and became Chairman of the Board in August 2008. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer in May 2004 after joining Medtronic as Senior Vice President and President of Medtronic's Vascular business in January 2002.
Bill joined Medtronic from Novoste Corp., where he had been President and Chief Executive Officer since 1998. Previous positions included Corporate Vice President and President of the Sherwood Davis and Geck organization of American Home Products; President of the Ethicon Endo-Surgery organization of Johnson & Johnson; President, Devices for Vascular Intervention and U.S. Operations, for Guidant Corp.; and several increasingly responsible executive positions culminating in the presidency of the Ivac organization for Eli Lilly & Co. He began his medical technology career with Carolina Medical Electronics in 1977.
He received his bachelor’s of science degree in electrical and biomedical engineering from Duke University in 1976 where he also conducted medical research in pathology. Bill also earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, in 1982.
Bill is a member of the Board of Visitors of the Engineering School of Duke University and the Guthrie Theatre Board.

Chris O’Connell was appointed Senior Vice President, and President of the Diabetes business at Medtronic in October 2006, where he is responsible for the business unit’s research, development, operations, and product sales and marketing. Located in Northridge, Calif., the Diabetes business is the world leader in insulin infusion pumps, continuous glucose monitoring systems, therapy management software, and related support services.
Chris first joined Medtronic in 1994 and has held a variety of leadership positions within the company. Most recently, he served as President of the company’s Emergency Response Systems division, formerly Physio-Control Corporation, based in Redmond, Wash. He has also served the company’s Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management business in several roles including Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and Vice President/General Manager of the Patient Management Business. In addition, Chris led key corporate functions as Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Director of Investor Relations.
Before joining Medtronic, he worked for the Corporate Finance unit of Chemical Bank.
Chris earned a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1989 and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1994.

Pat Mackin was named Senior Vice President and President of the Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management (CRDM) business in August 2007. In this role, he is responsible for the overall strategic direction for CRDM and its day-to-day operations.
Pat first joined Medtronic as Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Endovascular business in October 2002 where he was responsible for Endovascular Innovations, which included both Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and thoracic aneurysm/dissection technologies. In July 2004, he was named Vice President of the company’s Vascular business in Western Europe where he launched the company’s drug-eluting stent, Endeavor. Pat returned to the United States in November 2006, as Vice President, CRDM Commercial Operations. In this role, he was responsible for the day-to-day activities of CRDM research, product development, quality, operations, and sales and marketing.
Prior to joining Medtronic, Pat served Genzyme Biosurgery in several leadership and management roles including, Senior Vice President/General Manager of that company’s cardiovascular surgery and biotechnology businesses; Vice President of Sales and Marketing for cardiovascular surgery; and Director of Marketing for cardiovascular surgery. He also held several sales management positions for Snowden-Pencer. Pat began his career as an army officer with the U.S. Army.
He holds a bachelor’s in general engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and a master’s in business administration from the Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University.

Dr. Rick Kuntz is a Senior Vice President and President of the Neuromodulation business, which encompasses the company's products and therapies used in the treatment of chronic pain, movement disorders, spasticity, overactive bladder and urinary retention, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and gastroparesis. In this role, which he assumed in October 2005, Rick is responsible for the research, development, operations, and product sales and marketing for each of these therapeutic areas worldwide.
Prior to joining Medtronic, Rick was the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of the Harvard Clinical Research Institute, a university-based contract research organization which coordinates National Institutes of Health and industry clinical trials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in cardiovascular disease clinical trials having directed in excess of 100 multi-center clinical trials involving more than 45,000 patients and authoring more than 200 publications. Rick’s expertise in trial design and biostatistics is well-known in industry, academic and government circles.
Before arriving at Medtronic, Rick served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Clinical Biometrics, and was a staff interventional cardiologist in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Rick received his bachelor’s degree from Miami University (Ohio) in 1979, and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1983. After completing his residency in internal medicine at Parkland Memorial Hospital and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1987, he went on to complete fellowships in Cardiovascular Diseases and Interventional Cardiology at the Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School in 1991. Rick received his master’s of science in Biostatistics from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1990.

Kathleen DiGiorno has served as the company’s Vice President, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, reporting to the president and CEO, since 2006. In this role, Kathleen has global responsibility to ensure that ethics and compliance programs are administered on behalf of the company.
She joined Medtronic in 1998 and has previously served in a variety of legal roles including, serving the Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management business in the areas of clinical research, drafting and negotiating clinical trial agreements and informed consents, institutional review board issues, patient privacy/HIPAA issues, data use issues, potential anti-kickback and Medicare fraud issues related to clinical research, and publication and policy issues related to medical devices.
Prior to joining Medtronic, Kathleen was a shareholder at Briggs and Morgan P.A. in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she represented corporate clients in complex commercial litigation, with a focus on insurance coverage and appellate matters. She also clerked for the Honorable Frank Magill, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Kathleen received her bachelor’s degree with honors from Notre Dame, and graduated, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School, where she served as a Note and Comment Editor for the Minnesota Law Review.
Martha Goldberg Aronson was named Senior Vice President and Chief Talent Officer in March 2008. In this role she has responsibility for Medtronic’s global human resource function and leads the company’s efforts in managing its most important asset – global talent. She is also responsible for Communications.
Prior to this role, Martha served as Vice President of Investor Relations and in a number of general management roles. She joined Medtronic in 1991, first working in corporate development and strategic planning as a business analyst, then holding numerous marketing positions in the company’s Vascular and Urology businesses. Martha then served as Vice President and General Manager of Medtronic Gastroenterology/Urology in Minneapolis, and gained international business expertise as Vice President of the Neurological, Gastroenterology/Urology, Obesity Management, ENT/Neurologic Technology and Diabetes businesses in Western Europe. Prior to joining Medtronic, she was an associate consultant at Bain & Company, a global management consulting firm.
Martha graduated phi beta kappa and magna cum laude from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in economics. She earned her master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1995. She currently serves as a member of the Business Leadership Council of Wellesley College and has served in a variety of alumnae leadership roles. She is also a member of the Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable and serves on the boards of the Minnesota Opera and the Minneapolis Club.

Stephen N. Oesterle, M.D., joined the company in 2002 as Senior Vice President for Medicine and Technology. In this role, Steve provides executive leadership for Medtronic scientific research, formation of technological strategies and continued development of strong cooperative relationships with the world's medical communities, technical universities, financial institutions and emerging medical device companies.
Previously, Steve served as Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard University Medical School and as Director of Invasive Cardiology Services at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. A teacher and innovator in the field of cardiac catheterization, he has also developed and directed interventional cardiology programs at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles; at Georgetown University; and at Stanford University.
Steve is a 1973 summa cum laude graduate of Harvard College and received his medical doctorate from Yale University in 1977. He completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and also served a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Stanford.

Terrance (Terry) Carlson was named Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, on October 1, 2004. In this role, Terry leads the Legal function at Medtronic on a company wide basis.
Terry joined Medtronic from PerkinElmer, Inc., where he served as Senior Vice President, Business Development, General Counsel and Secretary. In this role, he was responsible for the legal, business development, strategic planning, and government affairs activities for PerkinElmer, an international provider of life and health sciences solutions, optoelectronics and other technology products and services. During a three-year period, Terry led more than 30 acquisitions and divestitures, transforming PerkinElmer into a leading provider of life and analytical sciences tools, including FDA regulated diagnostic devices and other high technology applications.
Prior to joining PerkinElmer, he served as Deputy General Counsel of AlliedSignal (now Honeywell International) and General Counsel of AlliedSignal Aerospace. From 1978 until 1994, he was an associate and partner with the international law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he served in the firm's London and Los Angeles offices, and established the firm's office in Hong Kong.
Terry received his bachelor’s degree with high honors in business from the University of Minnesota in 1975. He received his juris doctorate, cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1978.

Dr. Trevor Gunn is Director of International Relations for Medtronic, Inc., a large medical technology manufacturer based in Minneapolis. Daniel C. Sigg M.D. PhD, 44 years old, has been a director since November 2006. Dr. Sigg, a Swiss national, is currently serving as Senior Manager in the R&D Division of Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management at Medtronic, Inc., a leading medical device and technology company, which he joined in 2001. Dr. Sigg is a board-certified anesthesiologist and has significant clinical experience. His pre-clinical expertise includes both academic and industrial R&D. His areas of interest and expertise include cardiovascular physiology, biotechnology, pharmacology, and local drug delivery. To date, Dr. Sigg has published 19 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, as well as numerous book chapters and abstracts, and is inventor of five issued U.S. patents and over 20 pending U.S. patents. Dr. Sigg obtained his Medical Degree from the University of Basel, Switzerland, and his PhD degree in Physiology from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Sigg speaks German, English, French and some Italian.

Kim Johnson has over 15 years of experience within the new product development and project management area, much of it with 3M and a short stint with Medtronic as a Product Development Manager. She is now in the contracting and consulting world and has consulted with 3M, Smiths Medical , Taylor Corporation, Acist Medical, International Masters Publishers and others. Kim is a frequent presenter at many professional organizations such as PMI, PDMA, Innovation Network, ACA and other corporations that have a passion for new product development. Kim is also a certified New Product Development Professional (NPDP) as well as a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and has held numerous leadership roles in both organizations both at the local and National level. Nelson Soken has been published in academic psychology journals, presented papers at various professional technology conferences, has been an invited speaker on the topic of innovation, and holds a technology patent in software (EP1073943). Throughout his career, Nelson has been involved in a variety of activities such as: new opportunity identification, product planning, human factors strategy and management, innovation initiatives, knowledge management, competitive intelligence, and leadership development efforts. When not consulting with Barnes & Conti, he is a systems strategist and senior engineering manager at Medtronic, a medical device manufacturer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prior to joining Medtronic, he was manager of information resources at Honeywell International. Nelson also served in various senior technical positions both in Europe and the U.S. in which he participated in corporate strategy initiatives along with technical human factors activities. Nelson received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Macalester College and his doctorate in experimental child psychology from the University of Minnesota. His current clients include IBM, MTS Systems, and a major insurance company. He resides in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Christine has sung with numerous choirs from a very young age. She has studied voice as well as piano and flute. If pushed she will even pick up the accordion! Christine's family has been in the US since 1957. She has maintained an active interest in her Swedish identity, is a dual citizen and speaks Swedish fluently. She continues to draw inspiration from Scandinavian themes in her practice as a residential architect. Carline's marriage to a Swede sealed her love for the country, and she now travels there frequently and speaks the language fluently. Born in Jamaica, she moved to Minnesota as a youth. She has been involved with music most of her life, in particular voice, and is actively involved in the local fine arts community. Carline works for Medtronic, Inc., the world's leading medical technology company.
Catherine “Katie” Szyman was named Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy and Innovation for Medtronic in April 2008. In this role, Katie leads Medtronic’s corporate strategy, business development, corporate ventures, and Science & Technology functions, overseeing growth initiatives that leverage corporate-wide research and development capabilities and evaluating internal and external growth opportunities. She is responsible for Patient Access Acceleration (PAA) efforts, portfolio and competitive analysis. Katie is a member of the Executive, Strategy, and Investment Committees.
Previously, Katie served as Vice President and General Manager of Endovascular Innovations, part of the CardioVascular business unit based in Santa Rosa, Calif., where she was responsible for both abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic aneurysm and dissection technologies.
Katie joined Medtronic as an Internal Auditor in Minneapolis in 1991 and has held numerous management and leadership roles during her tenure with the company, including international positions in finance in both Belgium and Switzerland. She has also served as Vice President of Corporate Strategy in Minneapolis and as Vice President of Finance for the Vascular business in Santa Rosa.
Katie graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 1988 with a double major in Accounting and International Business. She received her master’s degree in business administration from Harvard Business School in 1997.
