Navigating his small grocery business through the remaining years of the Great Depression and into the turbulent pre-war years, Hendrik Meijer continued to look for ways to innovate and provide higher levels of service to his customers. He renamed his store the "Thrift Market" and began broadening his business through the use of newspaper ads and fancy metal shopping carts. As World War II raged, Mr. Meijer pledged his company's support to the war effort and, just like the Arsenal of Democracy, women became a key part of the Meijer workforce, numbering nearly half of all team members. After the war, Meijer's growth began in earnest. The company acquired an office in Greenville and opened its first store in Grand Rapids, the second largest city in Michigan. As Meijer's customer base grew, the company asked them to help choose a name for a new symbol. Through a local contest, a customer suggested the name "Thrifty" for Meijer's little Dutch boy, who became the company's symbol for the next thirty years. As the baby boom began and technology became part of American life, Meijer embraced new ways to help its customers. The introduction of the automated conveyor belt helped customers speed down the checkout lane. Meijer was one of the first grocers in the region to use the automatic system. A new technology called television was welcomed into American homes and so was Meijer, which ventured into television advertising on the popular Romper Room show. ...

Paul is the Information Officer for SWMPA. Earl D. Holton is a member of the board of directors at Steelcase Inc., the global leader in the office furniture industry. Steelcase delivers a better work experience to its customers by providing products, services and insights into the ways people work. Its portfolio includes architecture, furniture and technology products. Earl joined the board of Steelcase Inc. in 1998 and served as chair of the board from 1999-2003. Since the 1950s, Earl has worked in operations and management positions at Meijer, Inc., a Grand Rapids-based corporation comprised of supercenter stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. He managed various stores, becoming store director in 1955, district director in 1960 and operations manager in 1961. Earl was appointed senior vice president in 1973 and named president in 1980. He retired from this position in 1999. Earl presently serves as lead director on the board of CMS Energy. Earl is a former chairman and current board member of Grand Rapids Economic Club, and a member of the Executive Committee of Frederik Meijer Gardens, the Right Place Committee and Grand Valley State University Foundation Board. He also serves as a trustee of the Steelcase Foundation and as vice chair of the Spectrum Health System Board. Earl's community activities have included past service as Trustee of Albion College and Grand Valley State University and as a director of Goodwill Industries. He has also served as general chairman of United Way of Kent County. In 1997, he was inducted into the Grand Rapids Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame and is a recipient of an honorary doctorate degree in business administration from Grand Valley State University. Earl and his wife, Donnalee, reside in the Grand Rapids area.

Previously, Nancy was senior vice president of Global Human Resources, with responsibility for human resource practices and processes that are universal to Steelcase locations worldwide. She was named vice president, Human Resources, in May 1999, responsible for overall development and administration of human resources policies, processes and programs for Steelcase Inc. From 1994 to 1999, Nancy was vice president, Dealer and Customer Alliances, responsible for relationships with Steelcase's North American dealers and overall development of the dealer network. In May 1997, Nancy also became responsible for the Steelcase Furniture Management Coalition (FMC), a Steelcase Inc. subsidiary that offers the outsourcing of furniture-related management activities through a nationwide network of service providers. She joined Steelcase in 1986 as a district manager, where she was responsible for the sales of Steelcase furniture through Boston, Mass., and Northern New England dealers. In 1990, she was named regional manager and area sales director in Boston, Mass. Before joining Steelcase, Nancy worked at Philips Information Systems, in Dallas, Texas, from 1982 to 1985 and in Boston from 1985 to 1986. During that time, Nancy held positions as branch manager, national marketing support manager and assistant regional manager. From 1978 to 1982, Nancy held a variety of sales and marketing positions for Exxon Office Systems working in New York, NY, Orange County, Calif., San Francisco, Calif., and Dallas, Texas. Nancy earned a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in education from Albright College, in Reading, Pa., in 1973. She is on the board of directors of Fifth Third Bank, a Michigan banking corporation, and Meijer, Inc.
