Dr. Elisa Weiss is a medical sociologist and Director of Operations of the Research Program in Community Outreach and Health Disparities at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Her research has focused on creating new conceptual models and methodologies for evaluating the functioning of inter-organizational and academic-community partnerships, and for demonstrating the value of partnership work in addressing complex public health problems. Dr. Weiss is presently Co-investigator and Project Director of an NCI-sponsored participatory research study that is utilizing the Queens Borough Public Library system and community coalitions to foster access to cancer detection and preventive care in medically underserved communities. She was recently the partnership evaluator for a federally-funded CBPR project to address teen health disparities in the Bronx and for Team Up: Cancer Screening Saves Lives, a national collaborative project of the NCI, ACS, CDC, and USDA that was carried out in six Southern states to increase breast and cervical cancer screening rates among rarely or never screened women. In addition, Dr. Weiss is the PI of a multi-institutional pilot study in New York City that examines the socio-economic impact of colon cancer among low-income cancer survivors age 65 and older, in order to identify unmet resource and service needs. She is also the Co-PI of a study recently funded by the NCI that will, in collaboration with ENACCT, explore primary care physicians? attitudes towards cancer clinical trials and their referral patterns for low-income cancer patients in New York City; the study will use these data to adapt and test ENACCT?s cancer clinical trials education training for primary care physicians. Dr. Weiss received her doctorate in sociology from Columbia University.

At age 5, he was encouraged to begin study of the violin and later the piano, two instruments for which he formed a life-long passion. His first influential music teacher was Kathleen Butler-Hopkins of the University of Alaska. Other formative musical experiences included a half year of study in Leningrad, USSR in 1990 with Lev Alexandrovich Ivashenko at the Pre-Conservatory School, as well as several summers studying with Linda Cerone at ENCORE School for Strings, near Cleveland. At the end of high school Mr. Krauss decided to attend Stanford University rather than continue along the path of professional musical training. There he actively continued violin studies under the tutelage of Phillip Levy. He also pursued extensively his interest in chamber music. In academic studies, his favorite subjects included the Russian and Japanese languages, English literature and chemistry. After receiving his B. A. in chemistry in 1998, he continued with graduate work, obtaining his Ph. D. from Columbia University in August 2003. Mr. Krauss now works as a postdoctoral research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and hopes eventually to continue his career as a professor at a major university.

Jonine Bernstein, Ph.D., M.S. is an Associate Attending Epidemiologist at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in both the Departments of Community and Preventive Medicine and the Department of Oncologic Sciences at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Background: Dr. Bernstein holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Yale University, an M.S. in Applied Biometry from the University of Southern California, and an A.B. from Brown University. Her research has focused on understanding the joint roles of environmental exposures and genetic susceptibility in the etiology of cancer. She is currently involved in etiologic studies examining the roles of ATM, BRCA1/2, CHEK2, and other DNA repair genes in breast cancer. In addition, Dr. Bernstein is working on projects developing and validating biomarkers of disease. The common goal of all of these projects is to identify women at highest risk because of gene carrier status, environmental exposures, or a combination of both. To help carry out these studies, Dr. Bernstein has spear-headed an international multi-disciplinary consortium involving over 25 institutions in the US and abroad. She serves as a standing member of the NIH review group EPIC and has served as an ad hoc reviewer on over 20 reviews for the NIH, DOD, and VA. In addition to her work as the Chair of the ACE Membership Committee, she has served on numerous committees for the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), and has organized scientific symposia for AACR, SER, and ISEE. Dr. Bernstein was co-founder and co-Chair of the mentoring program at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC and elected Board member of the Woman's Faculty Group.

Dr. Sawyers is Chairman of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) and the first incumbent of the Marie Josee and Henry R. Kravis Chair. HOPP capitalizes on recent advances in understanding cancer cell biology and the development of molecularly targeted drugs and other rationally based interventions. It brings together physician-scientists from various clinical and scientific disciplines to conduct cutting-edge translational research across many types of cancer. Dr. Sawyers' work examines how signaling pathway abnormalities in cancer cells can be exploited as targets for new cancer drugs. The promise of this approach is best exemplified by Dr. Sawyers' key role in the clinical development of imatinib (Gleevec ), which targets the molecular cause of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with minimal side effects. His group subsequently deciphered the molecular basis for resistance to imatinib. Based on this insight, he led the development of a second drug called dasatinib, which is effective in CML patients whose disease fails to respond to imatinib. He has extended this approach to other diseases, including prostate cancer and glioblastoma, through laboratory-based studies that suggest new treatment strategies now undergoing clinical testing. Dr. Sawyers came to Memorial Sloan-Kettering after nearly two decades at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center and a clinical fellowship in hematology/oncology at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. His awards include the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award, and the David A. Karnofsky Award.
