Board of Directors
In late December 1996, Mason N. Carter was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Merrimac Industries. (Merrimac Announces Management Change)
A board member since 1995, Mr. Carter is leading the redefining of Merrimac in terms of strategic direction, culture and operations driving towards the goal of profitable growth reversing a ten year decline in real growth. Change is well underway with reengineering initiatives implemented, a major new product development program launched, market segment focus insight and a culture that provides co-workers with recognition, reward and empowerment. The Board of Directors elected Mr. Carter Chairman in July 1997. (Merrimac Industries Elects Carter As Chairman)
In July 1994, Mr. Carter joined Datatec Industries, Inc., a computer network implementation company, as President of the Product and Systems Group. Here he led the successful penetration into and growth of the indirect channel market segment. This included establishing Datatec as the first service only alliance partner of Andersen Consulting. Operationally, Mr. Carter created the value-added network configuration capability in multiple locations nationally.
From 1980-1992, Mr. Carter was an executive with Metex Corp., a public corporation, and its subsidiaries. He first took over as Vice President and General Manager of the Electronic Products Division, and EMI/RFI shielding business, where he led the operational turnaround and market penetration in Europe and in the Far East.
Promoted in 1982 to President of the Technical Products Division, he led the productivity improvement and cost reduction programs that allowed for the business to compete as a supplier to automotive OEMs. This, coupled with new product development programs and relationship selling, positioned this business as the dominant supplier of exhaust system and airbag components. He successfully established alliance partnerships for Pacific Rim market penetration.
In 1985, Mr. Carter assumed the position of Executive Vice President of the corporation and continued to establish his expertise in business turnaround and reengineering. As President of the Dorne and Margolin subsidiary, he led the operational reengineering for the manufacture of navigation and communication antenna for military, commercial and general aviation markets greatly improving profitability and on-time delivery. With a new focus on increased share of customer, the business was postured for record growth and profit.
Appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Metex Corp. in 1987, he held this position until 1992. In 1989, Metex merged with United Capital Corp. Subsequent to the merger, Mr. Carter served on the United Capital Board of Directors until 1994. During this period, Metex set record revenue growth and profit levels. Under his direction, each of the business units developed JIT delivery capability and achieved top quality ratings from major customers.
In 1992, United Capital invested in Kentile, Inc., a nationally known manufacturer of resilient flooring, which had filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. After filing, Mr. Carter was appointed President and CEO drastically consolidating operations, implementing process controls, establishing vendor alliances and opening new channels of distribution. He led Kentile out of bankruptcy in early 1994, sixteen months after filing. He served in this position until joining Datatec Industries, Inc. as a principal.
Prior to joining Metex, Mr. Carter was Vice President Sales and Marketing for Aerojet General Corporation's HR International subsidiary. During his eleven years with this $100 million manufacturer of in-process weighing systems, he successfully held positions of Director of Business Planning, Director of Aftermarket, Market Manager and Product Manager. Among his many accomplishments was the creation of a 24-hour quick response parts distribution center and the successful implementation of a broad microprocessor based product line. He initiated the first formal business planning utilizing the "product portfolio analysis" methodology he designed.
He began his career in marketing and sales in 1966 with Leslie Co., a process controls manufacturer. There he supported the manufacturer's rep sales force with market analysis, creative sales tools and product line support.
Overall, Mr. Carter's experience includes the following engineered technologies, products and services:
