Metro serves the residents of Europe's many cities. Founded in 1879 and headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, Metro AG (German: MEO) is Germany's largest retailer. The company operates about 2,400 stores in several formats: wholesale stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets, department and specialty stores under the Metro/Makro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Media Markt, Saturn and Galeria Kaufhof brands. It also runs restaurants in some of its stores. Operations are mainly in Germany, but it has locations in almost 30 other countries. The company has annual revenues of about ? 55.7 billion and employs about 261,400 people. In December 2005 the company disposed of 53 Praktiker locations to a real estate fund managed by IXIS AEW Europe.
