MicroIslet picks up where the pancreatic islet cells leave off. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in San Diego, CA, MicroIslet, Inc. is currently researching islet transplantation therapies. Dr. El-Kalay has over twenty years of biotechnology management experience building and leading Research and Product/Process Development teams. He has participated in the development of cell-based therapies for tissue regeneration applications including bone, cartilage and cardiac repair. Dr. El-Kalay joined the Company from Telos Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a San Diego-based company that developed monoclonal antibodies that modulate T-cell activity. Dr. El-Kalay was Director of Product Development at Applied Immune Sciences where he led the team that designed and manufactured various cell selection (T-cell and hematopoietic stem cell) devices. Dr. El-Kalay was Director of Device Engineering, at SyStemix, Inc., where he lead a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers and developed a novel immunoselection device to isolate and purify rare populations of hematopoietic stem cells. He also served at Osiris Therapeutics, Inc. where he and his team applied the regenerative properties of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in clinical trials that evaluated these cells in alveolar ridge augmentation. He was Vice President of Process and Product Development, at Morphogen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., where he and his team demonstrated that allogeneic muscle-derived pluripotent stem cells significantly improved cardiac function in myocardial infracted rat models. Ms. Meissner joined MicroIslet in January 2001 to lead the Process Research and Development efforts. She has a total of 9 years of industrial experience in optimization and development of pharmaceutical and food processes. Prior to joining MicroIslet, Dagmar Meissner was a Senior Scientist at Kelco Biopolymers where she was part of the team to develop ultrapure alginate. In addition, she led projects for the development and scale-up of novel food biopolymers. Dr. Stuiver is a cell and molecular biologist with extensive research experience in cancer, inflammation, signal transduction and adhesion receptor biology. She has joined the MicroIslet team as the Director of Research. Before joining MicroIslet, Dr. Stuiver was the Assistant Director of Clinical Research and Research Scientist at Maxia Pharmaceuticals for 3 years. At Maxia, she was instrumental in the development, design and implementation of phase I-III Clinical Trials for a non-surgical treatment of cervical dysplasia. During this time, she also led a successful Preclinical screening program, finding leads for the treatment of inflammation and osteoarthritis. Currently, Dr. Stuiver is also funded by an NIH R01 for research related to platelet adhesion receptor biology. Prior to her industrial experience, Dr. Stuiver was a Sr. Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellow at The Scripps Research Institute and studied adhesion receptors in cancer, hemostasis, thrombosis and the CNS. Realizing the need for a curative therapy for Type I insulin dependent diabetes was the impetus for the organization of MicroIslet Inc. and the alliance with Duke Medical School in 1998. Mr. Steel serves as the Director of Corporate Development of MicroIslet Inc. Beginning in 1995, Mr. Steel began to pursue interests in the field of Diabetes, a disease that he has had since 1982. He is a Founder and Director of AKESIS Pharmaceuticals, which has developed a patented treatment for insulin resistance for Type II diabetes. Clinical trials were completed in 1999. Mr. Patel is a chemical engineer with experience in pharmaceutical and diagnostic product manufacturing. He has a broad range of engineering and project management experience in biotechnology, with an extensive background in aseptic equipment design, installation, validation, and automation. Mrs. Dunkelman joined us in June 2004 with over 15 years experience in research, bio-process engineering and product development of cell-based products. As the Sr. Director Process Development at Forest Life Sciences, she led the development of activated Th1 cells for treatment of renal cell carcinoma. From 2000 to 2002, she was the Director of Product and Process Development at MorphoGen Pharmaceuticals, where she managed the research and product development for pluripotent stem cells for treatment of diabetes, skeletal, and neurodegenerative disease. From 1992 to 2000, she was a Research Scientist at Advanced Tissue Sciences, where she was the project leader responsible for bioreactor design from R&D concept to pre-clinical stage for cartilage product manufacturing. She also led the design and development of a bioreactor system for vascular graft production. Mrs. Dunkelman received her B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. James Shapiro is the Director of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program at the University of Alberta on Edmonton, Canada. He was recruited to this position in 1998 based on his expertise in the management of transplant patients, and on his extensive laboratory background in the field of anti-rejection drug treatments for islet transplantation. Dr. Shapiro's key contributions to the Clinical Islet Transplant Program led to the developmnent of the "Edmonton Protocol" for clinical islet transplantation, which is being evaluated in an international multi-centre study funded by a grant from the Immune Tolerance Network of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Shapiro has received many awards for his experiemental studies on islet research, including the Hunterian Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Gold Medal in Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Most recently, Dr. Shapiro and the Islet Transplantation Group were awarded the "Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Science Award" from the Alberta Science and Technology Foundation (ASTech). Dr. Shapiro has published numerous papers on islet and liver transplantation in such journals as The New England Journal of Medicine, Transplantation, Transplant International, and The British Journal of Surgery, and is a sought-after speaker on islet transplantation. Born in Leeds, England, Dr. Shapiro was trained at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and further trained in surgery at the University of Bristol. He also trained in liver transplant surgery, including a period of time at the University of Kyoto in Japan, where he learned live donor transplantation techniques. He has recently been awarded a Ph.D. in experimental islet transplantation at the University of Alberta, based on experimental research studies exploring immunosuppressive drug treatments for islet transplantation.

James R. Gavin III, MD, Ph.D. is a clinical professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He is also executive vice president for clinical affairs at Healing Our Village, LLC. He serves as interim president and CEO for Microislet, Inc. of San Diego, CA, maintaining an office base in Atlanta, GA. From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Gavin was president of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He served as senior scientific officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) from 1991 to 2002 and director of the HHMI-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program from 2000 to 2002. Before joining the senior staff of HHMI, Dr. Gavin was on the faculty at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as a professor and as chief of the Diabetes Section, acting chief of the Section on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hypertension, and William K. Warren Professor for Diabetes Studies. He previously served as an associate professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He was a lieutenant commander in the US Public Health Service from 1971 to 1973 and continues to serve as a reserve officer. Dr. Gavin belongs to a number of organizations, including the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Diabetes Association, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Association of Black Cardiologists, and the Sigma Pi Phi Leadership Fraternity. He is a past president of the American Diabetes Association and was voted Clinician of the Year in Diabetes by ADA in 1991. He has served on many advisory boards and on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology and the American Journal of Medical Sciences. He is on the board of trustees for Duke University, Emory University, Livingstone College and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In addition, he is national program director of the Harold Amos Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Gavin is immediate past chairman of the National Diabetes Education Program and a member of the Board of Scientific Councilors for the Intramural Research Program of NIDDK. He also serves as chairman of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the VA Cooperative Diabetes Study. Dr. Gavin has published more than 190 articles and abstracts in such publications as Science, the Journal of Applied Physiology, Diabetes, and the American Journal of Physiology. He is author of two books, Healing Our Village: A Self-Care Guide for Diabetes Control (with L. Coleman) and Dr. Gavin's Health Guide for African Americans (with S. Landrum). He also hosts the "Powerpoint" health talk radio show for public radio station WCLK, 91.9 FM, Atlanta. Among the many honors Dr. Gavin has received are the Daniel Hale Williams Award, the E.E.
