Dr. Steinman is world renowned for his discovery of dendritic cells and their critical role in the initiation of immune responses in clinically important situations such as graft rejection, resistance to tumors, autoimmune diseases, and infectious diseases. His current research addresses the fundamental mechanisms of immunity and their relationship with human diseases, including studies aimed at developing vaccines and immune-based therapies for tumors, infections and autoimmune diseases. Steinman's research points to dendritic cells as the critical sentinels of the body that fundamentally regulate the induction of both immune tolerance and activation. Dr. Steinman received a B.S. degree, with honors, from McGill University, and an M.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Medical School. He is a corresponding fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a member of the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine, and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards. Dr. Benes described the work of the final speaker, Christopher A. Walsh, M.D., Ph.D., as an appropriate follow-up to Dr. Kuperberg's: he is mapping the genes involved in the development of the cerebral cortex to try to understand the disruptions that underlie developmental brain disorders. Dr. Walsh is chief of the division of genetics at Children's Hospital, Boston, chief of neurogenetics in the department of neurology at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Bullard Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, and director of its combined M.D.-Ph.D. program. His work has garnered widespread recognition, including a NARSAD Independent Investigator Award in 1998. Dr. Walsh began by stressing that disorders related to malfunction of the cerebral cortex, such as mental retardation, learning disorders, epilepsy, autism and schizophrenia, are all more or less genetically based and extremely complex. To get a handle on the problem, he and his colleagues started by studying simpler abnormalities of the cortex related to size or gray-matter folding, working mostly with patients in the Middle East, where populations tend to be more isolated, marriage between relatives is common and families large, thus providing a large and relatively homogeneous genetic pool. Through this research, Dr. Walsh stated, his team has identified many previously unknown syndromes and defined a number of them genetically. The findings from this research eventually led Dr. Walsh to contemplate the more complex challenge of autism. While twin studies and other evidence point to autism as a highly genetic disorder, Dr. Walsh explained that it has been very difficult to correlate its clinical symptoms with specific genes. Many genes are thought to be involved and different families with autistic members tend to show different genetic profiles. There are known chromosomal defects associated with the disorder, and probably complex multigenic interactions, none of which, he said, has been defined.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Arthur M. Sackler was educated in the arts, sciences and humanities at New York University. These interests remained the focus of his life, as he became widely known as a scientist, art collector and philanthropist, endowing institutions of learning and culture throughout the world. He felt that his fundamental role was as a doctor, a vocation he decided upon at the age of four. After completing his internship and service as house physician at Lincoln Hospital in New York City, he became a resident in psychiatry at Creedmoor State Hospital. There, in the 1940s, he started research that resulted in more than 150 papers in neuroendocrinology, psychiatry, and experimental medicine. He considered his scientific research into the metabolic basis of schizophrenia his most significant contribution to science, and served as editor of the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Psychobiology from 1950 to 1962. In 1960 he started publication of Medical Tribune, a weekly medical newspaper which reached over one million readers in 20 countries. He established the Laboratories for Therapeutic Research in 1938, a facility in New York for basic research which he directed until 1983. As a generous benefactor to the causes of medicine and basic science, Arthur Sackler built and contributed to a wide range of scientific institutions: the Sackler School of Medicine established in 1972 at Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel; the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Science at New York University founded in 1980; the Arthur M. Sackler Science Center dedicated in 1985 at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts; the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, established 1980, and the Arthur M. Sackler Center for Health Communications, established in 1986, both at Tufts University, Boston, Massachusetts. His pre-eminence in the art world is already legendary. According to his wife Jillian, one of his favorite relaxations was to visit museums and art galleries, and picking out great pieces others had overlooked. His interest in art is reflected in his philanthropy; he endowed galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Princeton University, a museum at Harvard University, and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of Asian Art in Washington, DC. True to his oft-stated determination to create bridges between peoples, he offered to build a teaching museum in China, which Jillian made possible after his death, and in 1993 opened the Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University in Beijing. In a world that often sees science and art as two separate cultures, Arthur Sackler saw them as inextricably related. In a speech given at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Some reflections on the arts, sciences and humanities, a year before his death, he observed: "Communication is, for me, the primum movens of all culture. In the arts I find the emotional component most moving. In science, it is the intellectual content. Both are deeply interlinked in the humanities." The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia at the National Academy of Sciences pay tribute to this faith in communication as the prime mover of knowledge and culture.

Roger Tsien, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Howard Hughes Investigator at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Tsien designed many highly informative fluorescent reporters of signaling and gene expression in live cells and has creatively used them to elucidate fundamental mechanisms of calcium signaling and synaptic plasticity. These fluorescent probes make possible a wide range of high-throughput screening assays and explorations of cell function. Dr. Tsien's work has won many honors, including the Heineken, Wolf, and Rosenstiel awards and the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Invention. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In October 2008, Dr. Tsien was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2008 by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his seminal contributions regarding understanding the chemistry of the fluorescence properties of "green fluorescent protein"( GFP) and other members of the GFP family. Importantly, the modified GFPs developed by Dr. Tsien provided the means to analyze protein-protein interactions and changes in protein structure, such as the binding of ligands by receptors. Many of Dr. Tsien's discoveries have resulted in issued patents covering the use of GFP for these applications. Senomyx has licensed the use of patented GFP technology in the flavor and fragrance field. Dr. Tsien is a founder of Senomyx. He joined the Senomyx Scientific Advisory Board in July 1999.
Dr. Mak is Director of The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research, and Professor, University of Toronto, Departments of Medical Biophysics and Immunology. He served as Vice President of Research, Amgen, Inc. and Director of the Amgen Research Institute (Toronto) from 1993 to 2002. Dr. Mak is internationally recognized for his breakthrough discoveries in cancer genetics, immunology, molecular biology and virology. These discoveries include locating, isolating and cloning the T cell receptor and creating genetically-engineered mice to increase the understanding of the human immune system, apoptosis and tumorigenesis. He holds numerous patents and has published over 650 articles, many in high-impact scientific journals around the world.
Dr. Mak has received several awards including the Sloan Prize of the General Motors Cancer Foundation, King Faisal International Prize for Medicine, Novartis Prize in Immunology, Gairdner International Award, E.W.R. Steacie Award (NSERC), Ayerst Award (Canadian Biochemical Society), Stacie Prize (Stacie Trust Foundation), Robert Noble Prize (NCIC), Killam Prize in Health Sciences (Canada Council for the Arts) and the Order of Canada. In March 2004, he received the 2004 Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstaedter Preis in Germany. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), the Royal Society of London, and the Royal Society of Canada.
