Navis LLC

Jon Shields co-founded Navis in 1988. Dr. Shields co-founded Navis shortly after completing his PhD in Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 1986. The inspiration for Navis itself can be traced to his masters thesis "A Computer-Aided Containership Stowage Planning System". While still a student, Shields worked as a consultant to American President Lines in the late 70's and 80's, developing a number of systems addressing stowage coordination, terminal operations, and vessel deployment planning. In the course of growing the company Dr. Shields has performed many different roles, but has always maintained a technical focus. He was the architect of SPARCS, Navis' flagship application, and provided leadership to the SPARCS development team for many years. Beginning in 2002 Dr. Shields turned his focus to retooling the Navis technology platform. This led to Navis' next generation terminal management system "SPARCS N4", for which Shields has been the principal software architect. Today Dr. Shields continues to serve the company as Chief Technology Officer and board member. Shields earned a PhD, MS and BS degrees in Naval Architecture and Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. Shields has published a number of technical works, including a revolutionary theory of water wave dynamics he developed as a graduate student (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, July, 1986).

Tiemroth led the development of Navis Express from its inception and has been a key contributor to the development of Navis SPARCS and CAPS II (now Navis PowerStow). Prior to co-founding Navis in 1988, Tiemroth was a partner in Ship Research, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in marine hydrodynamics and ocean engineering. While at Ship Research, he and Navis co-founder Jonathan Shields were instrumental in developing the concept of decision support systems based on bit-mapped graphics technology. Their work led to the development of TACTICS for American President Lines, the world's first integrated, real-time, graphical vessel and yard planning system. He also developed Working Schedule Planner, a decision support system for calculating and optimizing crane split activity, and was a key contributor in the evolution of CAPS, a containership stowage planning and tracking tool used by American President Lines.

Etienne Studer is a Senior Java Software Developer at Navis LLC, world-wide market leader of Marine Terminal Operating Systems, based in Oakland. Starting his Java developer career at Canoo in Switzerland, he joined Navis three years ago and has been working on architectural decisions, framework infrastructure, and application development for Navis' next-generation products. Etienne is an expert in UltraLightClient (ULC), IntelliJ IDEA, and TeamCity and has spoken at various conferences and JUGs in California on behalf of JetBrains.

Mr. McKinlay is Director of Portfolio Monitoring and Management at Navis Capital Partners (Thailand) Limited, which he joined in 2003. From 1999 until 2003 he was with Heinz, where he was Country Manager for Indonesia (Heinz ABC and Heinz Suprama) and President of Heinz Korea. Prior to joining Heinz, he had a background of consumer goods consulting, marketing and distribution in Asia. Mr. McKinlay was raised and received his education in the United Kingdom, and he holds an MBA from INSEAD and a MA Theoretical Physics from University of Cambridge.
