Allan Basbaum grew up in Montreal,Canada, where he learned French as a second language and did undergraduate studies at McGill University. After training at the University of Pennsylvania and University College London he accepted a position at UCSF. He is presently Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomy, where he teaches neuroanatomy to Medical Students and runs a neuroscience research laboratory that addresses the mechanisms that underlie the development of persistent pain conditions. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of Cognetix Corp., Analgesics, and the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation. Allan was appointed to the French American and International board in 1988, and served as President until 2004. Since his daughter Katherine began school when French American and International was located on Grove Street, and was called FABS, the move to the Oak Street Campus was the second major move since Allan's affiliation with the school began. Among the accomplishments of the Board during his Presidency are, of course, the move to Oak Street, the dramatic and successful growth of the high school and the high recognition now given to the French American-CAIS international (bilingual) models of education in the local, national and international communities.

David Julius is currently a Professor in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is interested in the molecular biology of sensory transduction and neurotransmitter action in the mammalian nervous system. One of his goals is to understand the molecular basis of somatosensation - the process whereby we experience touch and temperature - with an emphasis on identifying molecules that detect noxious (pain-producing) stimuli. He is also interested in understanding how somatosensation is altered in response to tissue or nerve injury. David received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, and his bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
