Newsweek

Roger is the Newsweek Education Program College Manager, focusing on colleges and other post-secondary schools. Previously, Roger was the New York Times' Education Manager for the Washington, DC region. He has also worked in various sales and marketing positions for the Stars and Stripes newspaper and the Baltimore Sun. Roger attended Virginia Tech University and graduated from Marymount University in Arlington, Va., with a B.S. in psychology.

Alan Chin is a documentary photographer who has covered conflicts in the Balkans, Central Asia, and the Middle East, for the New York Times, Newsweek, and other newspapers and magazines.

Professor Hill began her law career as an Associate with the Washington, D.C., firm of Wald, Harkrader & Ross. She has worked as special counsel to the assistant secretary of the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights and served as advisor to the chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Professor Hill is the author of numerous articles on international commercial law, bankruptcy, and civil rights, all areas in which she has taught. She presents on commercial law as well as race and gender equality, and her commentary is regularly published in Newsweek, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe. She has served on numerous boards of directors for nonprofit organizations and is the author of Speaking Truth to Power, which chronicles her experience as a witness in the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Dr. Hill is Professor of Social Policy, Law, and Women's Studies at The Heller School for Social Policy and Management.

Bret Begun was named national affairs editor in November 2006. In that position, he co-coordinates the magazine's political coverage and helps oversee the handling of breaking domestic news. Previously, Begun served as deputy editor for Newsweek's front-of-the-book section, Periscope, and contributed to the magazine's back-of-the-book coverage. He's been a member of the magazine's Olympics reporting team, covering the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy; the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; and the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Begun joined Newsweek in 1998 as an intern and moved to editorial assistant that same year. He was named assistant editor in 2000, associate editor in 2001, general editor in 2003 and senior writer in 2004. Begun earned a BSJ from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.

Clifford M. Sloan is Vice President, Business Development and General Counsel of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, The Washington Post Company's Internet and new media subsidiary. Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive publishes washingtonpost.com and Newsweek.com. Mr. Sloan oversees all legal matters and business development for the company. He has served in various government positions, including Associate Counsel to the President of the United States (1993-95), Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice (1989-91), Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel (Iran-Contra) (1987-88) and Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge J. Skelly Wright. Mr. Sloan also has taught the law of cyberspace as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, George Washington University Law School and American University's Washington College of Law.

Dan Michalski is a seasoned journalist who has written for The New York Times, Texas Monthly, Newsweek, Men's Health, The Dallas Morning News, and the Dallas Observer. Daniel McGinn is a national correspondent at Newsweek, based in Boston. He writes about business and a variety of other topics. Daren Briscoe joined NEWSWEEK in July, 2004 as a Correspondent in the Washington Bureau, where he provides national and regional coverage of breaking news, immigration, race, social policy and law enforcement. At NEWSWEEK, Briscoe has covered Hurricane Katrina's aftermath in New Orleans, the rise of online "Netbanging" by computer-savvy gang members, and the federal witness protection program's struggles to protect younger witnesses. In 2005, he was the recipient of a 2005 Lincoln University Unity Award for his reporting role in "The Audacity of Hope," a profile of Senator Barack Obama. Prior to joining NEWSWEEK, Briscoe worked at the Los Angeles Times between September, 2001 and July, 2004 as a general assignment and local government reporter, and contributed to a 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning series about a troubled public hospital. He also interned at Newsday (Long Island), Media General News Service (Washington, D.C.), The Children's Advocate Newspaper (Oakland) and NBC-affiliate KRON-TV (San Francisco). A native Los Angeleno, he holds a B.A. in Mass Communications from UC Berkeley and an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University, where he graduated with honors in 2001. Briscoe lives in DC with his wife, Rochelle.

Gary Knight was born in England in 1964. He began working as a photographer in the mid-1980s in Southeast Asia and Indochina embarking on a portrayal of the internecine warfare in a region coming to terms with the end of the cold war. In January 1993 he traveled to the former Yugoslavia where he became involved in documenting war crimes against humanity, the core theme of his work to this day. His work has been widely published by magazines all over the world and he has contributed work to several books. He occasionally lectures and is the author of several essays on journalism and photography. He is a contract photographer for Newsweek and a founding member of VII Photo Agency.

Jonathan Alter graduated from Harvard in 1979, was an editor of The Washington Monthly in 1981-82, and remains a contributing editor. He joined Newsweek in 1983, where he is a senior editor and columnist. He joined NBC News as a contributing correspondent in 1996 and appears frequently on the "Today" show, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC. He is married, has three children, and lives in Montclair, New Jersey.

While Johannesburg bureau chief, Contreras reported on political unrest in South Africa's black townships, the negotiations over a new democratic constitution, and the election of Nelson Mandela as president. Contreras's May 9, 1994 cover story, "Black Power," was an extensive account of South Africa's transition from apartheid to majority rule. Prior to his work in South Africa, Contreras helped coordinate Newsweek's coverage of South and Central America. In 1989, he contributed several articles on the Colombian drug wars and the revolution in Peru. Also that year, Contreras received a citation from the Overseas Press Club for his coverage of the international adoption market ("Adoption from Abroad," 6/6/88). He joined Newsweek in October 1980 as a correspondent in the magazine's Los Angeles bureau. He was the co-winner of the Robert Bell Award for excellence in the coverage of aerospace stories from the Aviation/Space Writers Association for a November 1980 cover story, "Saturn's Rings." A native Californian, Contreras worked as an intern in the Los Angeles bureau in the summer of 1978. The following year, he was a summer intern for The Washington Post, and later was a stringer for Newsweek in London in 1979 and 1980. Contreras graduated from Harvard University in 1979 with a B.A. in social studies. While at school, he was associate editorial chairman of The Crimson, the campus' daily newspaper. In 1980, he received an M.S. in International Relations from the London School of Economics. Contreras has two daughters and a son and divides his time between Mexico City and Miami.

Katie Connolly joined NEWSWEEK in June 2007, working for NEWSWEEK's international editions. In September 2007, she was assigned to cover Republican presidential candidates for Newsweek's special election issue and book. For this project, Katie was detached from the weekly magazine and her reporting was embargoed until after election day. As a result, she gained exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the McCain campaign. Now based in DC, Katie was named Political Correspondent in November 2008 and covers the White House and Capitol Hill. Katie received her Master of Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where she was the 2005 Menzies Scholar. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland and completed her honors thesis on media representations of the East Timor conflict at the University of Melbourne. She was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia.

Lester Sloan has worked in journalism as a photographer, writer, commentator, and cameraman. His career began in Detroit, where he was employed at WJBK-TV, a CBS affiliate, as a cameraman/reporter. He joined Newsweek magazine in 1970, for what became a 25-year career as a staff photographer, responsible for covering the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. He has covered six presidents and two trips with the Pope, as well as the 1984 winter games in Sarajevo and summer games in Los Angeles. In 1976 he was awarded a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, where he studied German and the history of southern Africa. In addition to his work for Newsweek, Lester worked as a contributing editor for Emerge magazine and as a commentator for National Public Radio's Weekend Edition. He was a contributor to My Soul Looks Back in Wonder: Voices of the Civil Rights Experience (May 2004, Sterling), published as part of the Voices of Civil Rights project.

Norma Kent is Vice President of Communications at AACC, where she is responsible for the association's news media relations, publications, marketing, corporate program and endowment program. She works regularly with national news outlets - including CNN, PBS (NewsHour with Jim Lehrer), New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, the Associated Press and education trade publications such as The Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed. She routinely provides background information for press coverage about community colleges to both national and regional news media. She interacts regularly via monthly meetings with peers in the six largest higher education associations, and is the staff liaison for the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), an AACC affiliated council whose members are public information officers in community colleges throughout the nation. In addition to her over 10 years of service to AACC, Norma was an executive and principal in marketing agencies in San Diego (CA) and Jacksonville (FL). She also worked as a development office manager for the San Diego Zoo, where she supervised priority fund-raising campaigns. Immediately prior to joining AACC, she was media relations manager for the seven-college, Dallas County Community College District, Texas' largest undergraduate institution.

Ron Haviv graduated from New York University in 1987. His images of the first killings of Bosnian civilians in the civil war of the former Yugoslavia warned the world of the horror to come, and he remains committed to the necessity of keeping our attention focused on the emotional consequences of bloody ethnic wars. Haviv is a contract photographer for Newsweek and his work is widely published by magazines throughout the world, including Life, Time, Esquire, German Geo, Stern, Paris-Match and The New York Times magazine; and is the subject of a one-hour National Geographic Explorer Channel documentary. His latest book entitled Afghanistan: The Road to Kabul was published in autumn 2002. He is a co-founder of the VII Photo Agency.

Andrew Nagorski. Andrew Nagorski returned to New York as a senior editor in January 2000, after serving as a foreign correspondent in several postings, most recently in Berlin. In his new job, Nagorski is developing the editorial cooperation between Newsweek International and its expanding network of foreign language editions and other joint venture partners. The most recent addition has been Newsweek Polska, which has become Poland's leading newsmagazine since it was launched in September, 2001. Nagorski also continues to write reviews and commentaries for Newsweek International. As Berlin bureau chief from 1996 to 1999, Nagorski provided in-depth reporting about Germany's efforts to overcome the legacy of division, the immigration debate, and German-Jewish relations. From Berlin, Nagorski also covered Central Europe, taking advantage of his long experience in the region and his knowledge of Polish, Russian, German and French. From 1990 to 1994, he served as Newsweek's Warsaw bureau chief, and he has served two tours of duty as Newsweek's Moscow bureau chief, first in the early 1980s and then from 1995 to 1996. In 1982, he gained international notoriety when the Soviet government, angry about his enterprising reporting, expelled him from the country. After spending the next two and a half years as Rome bureau chief, he became Bonn bureau chief. From 1978 to 1980, Nagorski served as the Hong Kong-based Asian regional editor for Newsweek International and then as Hong Kong Bureau Chief. After joining Newsweek International in 1973 as an associate editor, he was its assistant managing editor from 1977 to 1978. In 1988, Nagorski took a one-year leave of absence to serve as a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. He is the author of two non-fiction books: "Reluctant Farewell: An American Reporter's Candid Look Inside the Soviet Union" (New Republic/Henry Holt, 1985) and "The Birth of Freedom: Shaping Lives and Societies in the New Eastern Europe" (Simon & Schuster, 1993). His first novel, "Last Stop Vienna, " about the early years of the Nazi movement, will be published by Simon & Schuster in January, 2003. Nagorski has been honored three times by the Overseas Press Club for his reporting. His expertise has also resulted in appearances on programs such as CBS's "Face the Nation," CNN's "International Hour," National Public Radio, BBC-TV, Voice of America and PBS's "MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour." Nagorski taught social studies at Wayland High School in Massachusetts before joining Newsweek. Born in Edinburgh of Polish parents (who shortly after his birth emigrated to the United States), he attended school overseas while his father was in the U.S. foreign service. He earned a B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Amherst College in 1969 and studied at the University of Cracow. Nagorski and his wife, Christina, have four children.

BRUCE JAFFE is a freelance photographic consultant and runs a "computer doctor" business in New York. Previously, during his 15 years at Newsweek where he rose to Senior Photo Editor, he edited picture stories in every area, including international news, politics, arts and culture. Jaffe's tenure included working on every major news story, from the Internet revolution to Oklahoma City, to 9/11, to presidential campaigns, to the capture of Saddam Hussein. He helped develop the photographic style for the Tip Sheet (domestic) and Good Life (overseas) sections in the back of the book. Prior to Newsweek he spent four years as Photo Library Manager at the Gamma Liaison Agency.

Eleanor Clift is a contributing editor for Newsweek. She regularly reports on the White House, Congress and the diverse personalities who make up the Washington power structure. Clift is a key member of the magazine?s political team. She followed the campaign of Bill Clinton from its start, and in June 1992 was named deputy Washington bureau chief. She played a key role in Newsweek's Special Election Project, assembling a behind-the-scenes chronicle of the 2000 presidential campaign and First Lady Hillary Clinton's historic run for the U.S. Senate. Clift became Newsweek's White House Correspondent when Jimmy Carter was elected and held the position through Ronald Reagan?s first term. In 1985, she left Newsweek to cover the Reagan administration for the Los Angeles Times. A year later she returned to Newsweek and a new assignment as the magazine?s congressional and political correspondent, a position which she held for six years. After Clinton?s election in 1992, Clift returned to the White House beat for the first two years of the Clinton administration. Clift is also a political analyst for the Fox News Network. She has appeared on many national television shows, including ABC's Nightline and Good Morning America, NBC?s The Today Show, CNN's Crossfire and PBS?s The News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Playing herself - as a member of The McLaughlin Group - Clift has appeared in several films, including Independence Day, Rising Sun, Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and Dave, as well as the CBS series, Murphy Brown. Clift and her husband, Tom Brazaitis, co-wrote the book, War Without Bloodshed: The Art of Politics (Scribner, June 1996), also available in paperback (Touchstone Books, November 1997). Clift also co-authored Madam President: Shattering the Last Glass Ceiling (Scribner, July 2000), which forecasts the prospects for a woman on the national ticket. Her latest book is: Founding Sisters and the Nineteenth Amendment (October 2003). Clift lives in Washington, D.C., and is the mother of three children.
