After studying for his law degree at the University of Birmingham Nick began his career as a solicitor with Richards Butler, now Reed Smith Richards Butler, a City firm focused on corporate and commercial law. Having established himself as a commercial lawyer, Nick's next move was to join British American Tobacco's legal department. Here he quickly turned businessman, holding several senior management positions at BAT in both the US and the UK in a career that spanned 25 years with the company. Among his many roles at BAT Nick led a cross functional team that developed and implemented the successful defence of the bid for BAT Industries brought by Sir James Goldsmith. A few years later he led the repositioning of BAT's public stance on tobacco issues, enabling BAT to embrace corporate social responsibility. During his time with the company in the US he also led the defence of the Group in complex US litigation and represented the company at US House and Senate Congressional hearings. Retiring from the board at BAT in 2003 Nick retained a relationship with the company chairing their investment in a Formula One team, he then subsequently managed the sale of that team to Honda. Currently Nick is a non-executive director of business law firm Bond Pearce and retailer Next plc. He is also both an Independent Member of Council of Roehampton University in London and a member of the Coalition for Learning Disabilities Advisory Board.
