Nextel Partners brings cellular to the country. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Kirkland, WA, Nextel Partners, Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTP) owns exclusive rights to offer communications services in mid-sized and rural US markets under the Nextel brand. The company's services include Direct Connect, cellular voice, short messaging and cellular internet access. It has more than 1.6 million handsets in service and operates more than 70 company-owned retail outlets in the US. The company has 2005 revenue of about $1.8 billion and employs about 2,905 people. It has about 1.9 million subscribers. In November 2005, the company and Sprint Nextel launched Nextel Direct Send Picture, the first walkie-talkie application in the industry that allows picture sharing between recipients while on a walkie-talkie call.
