Norfolk Southern is engaged principally in the rail transportation business. Through its main subsidiary, Norfolk Southern Railway Company, Co. is primarily engaged in the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products and finished goods primarily in the Southeast, East and Midwest and, via interchange with rail carriers, to and from the rest of the U.S. Co. also transports overseas freight through several Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports. As of Dec 31 2007, Co.'s railroads operated approximately 21,000 miles of road in 22 eastern states and the District of Columbia.
