Brad Gliner has been our Vice President, Research, since September 2004, and from June 1999 to September 2004 was our Director of Research. Prior to joining Northstar, Brad was a founder and held various research positions at Heartstream, Inc. Brad holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. Brad's focus at Northstar is to lead research activities.

Matt Gani has been Northstar's Vice President of Product Development since January 2007 and served as the Director of Product Development since June 2005. Mr. Gani's focus at Northstar is to lead the development team in design and implementation of cortical stimulation technologies. Mr. Gani has over 22 years experience in the development of Class III implantable medical devices. Previously, Mr. Gani served as Senior Director, Program Management and Software Development at Micro Systems Engineering, Inc., an implantable medical device company. Mr. Gani holds a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales.

Jesse I. Treu, Ph.D. , has been a Partner of Domain since its inception 22 years ago. He has been a director of over 30 early-stage health care companies, 18 of which have so far become successful public companies. Present board memberships include Altea Therapeutics, Aesthetic Sciences, BiPar Sciences, CoLucid, Regado Biosciences, SenoRx and Somaxon Pharmaceuticals. Past board memberships include Biosite Diagnostics, Dianon Systems, DNX, GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Inspire Pharmaceuticals, Iomai, Lumisys, NPS Pharmaceuticals, Northstar Neuroscience, OraPharma, Sepracor, Trimeris and Viagene. He has served as a Founder, President and Chairman of numerous venture stage companies. Prior to the formation of Domain, Dr. Treu had 12 years of experience in the health care industry. Dr. Treu was V.P. of the predecessor organization to The Wilkerson Group, and its venture capital arm, CW Ventures. While at CW Ventures, he served as President and CEO of Microsonics, a pioneer in computer image processing for cardiology. From 1977 through 1982, Dr. Treu led new product development and marketing planning for immunoassay and histopathology products at Technicon Corporation (now Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics). Dr. Treu began his career with GE in 1973, initially as a research scientist developing thin film optical sensors for immunoassay testing, and subsequently serving on the corporate staff with responsibility for technology assessment and strategic planning. Dr. Treu received his B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and from Princeton University his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in physics.

Prior to joining Canaan, Seth served as CEO and Chairman at CytoTherapeutics (CTII). Before that, he helped start and served as head of R&D for Ortho Biotech, a division of Johnson & Johnson. In that role, he led the development efforts for a portfolio of projects which are still responsible for significant Johnson and Johnson revenues. He began his industrial career at Schering-Plough where he ran clinical trials for the alpha interferon project, and later transferred to Biogen to run that company's pharmaceutical development efforts. His academic career began when he served on the medical and public health faculty at Chapel Hill. Seth is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Chapel Hill where he teaches and advises the faculty on biotechnology issues. Recently, Seth was included in the 2006 Midas List, a prominent venture capital listing which ranks the best dealmakers in high-tech and life sciences.
