NPR Launching New Online Local Pilot With $3 Million From CPB, Knight
When Vivian Schiller took the job as CEO of NPR, she told paidContent she thought NPR was uniquely positioned in hyperlocal: “Big news organizations spend hours wondering how do I create the hyperlocal presence, you don’t have the infrastructure. NPR can do it. It already has the trust and...
PBS plans to air sitcom based on NPR's 'Car Talk'
PBS, a nonprofit television venture owned by 354 public stations nationwide, plans to broadcast an animated sitcom based on the NPR radio show "Car Talk." The radio show's hosts, Tom and Ray Magliozzi, will provide voices for the characters Click and Clack in half-hour segments in about a...
Fourth bore will spare the air
I get mighty tired of the Luddites stalling the construction of the new bore to the Caldecott tunnel. Environmental impacts include the existing stop-and-go traffic on Highways 24 and 13 in Contra Coast County commute traffic. This stop- and-go traffic produces much higher volumes of smog chemicals,...
A rumble on Sesame Street: the politics of public broadcasting
Ten years ago, the Gingrich Congress briefly toyed with the idea of defunding public broadcasting--an event we all should remember, because our liberal friends and relatives are still e-mailing us petitions to stop it. According to The Nation, when the conservative PBS personality Ben Wattenberg heard that public TV might...
Pledge drives better than ads

Full-blown panic erupted in the councils of public broadcasting when a House Appropriations subcommittee declared its intention to cut $100 million from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting next year and zero out CPB funding in two years.John Lawson of the PBS-station lobby called it "attempted murder" of the system. National...

Doug Dansie (Readers' Forum, April 20) may be interested in another study involving Fox News, this one was performed by the University of Maryland. Tavis Smiley: why everyone listens when this man talks
When Tavis Smiley talks, you know he has something to say. That's why millions of people tune in every day to his radio talk show. "The Tavis Smiley Show from NPR," and his late night TV talk show, "Tavis Smiley" on PBS. They also tune in to "The Tom...
NPR's sad state
The fact that Tavis Smiley (Interview, by Leah Samuel, March issue) is a black "first" at NPR and PBS is a sorry commentary on NPR and PBS. The main reason I no longer get much of my news from NPR is that it is so lost in its own white,...
