Dow Jones Description

Our firm provides management expertise and capital to small and mid-sized tech and telecom companies. We invest in both early-stage companies and in later-stage turnarounds. We are especially interested in situations where we can also be helpful with other things like recruiting, follow-on fund raising, joint ventures, and strategic advice. We're not a typical venture firm. First of all, we invest only our own capital. Second, we take an active role in helping our companies succeed by helping with things like recruiting, accounting, legal, facilities, strategic planning, M&A, etc. During the past five years, we've focused our investment strategy on two types of companies: - Early stage: We like to partner with companies and entrepreneurs with great ideas who are in search of capital. No business opportunity is too early for us. In this category we're especially interested in broadband, wireless services, web media, and data mining. - Turnarounds and accelerators: We acquire or invest in more mature businesses that need some catalyst to accelerate their growth. These are sometimes standalone businesses and sometimes business units inside larger companies. They often need capital, additional management, strategic focusing and attention. If you are an entrepreneur with an idea or an executive at a more mature company with an interest in restructuring, refinancing, or divesting, please contact us. Call us at 650-470-7500 or email any of us at the addresses here.

Sean Doherty is the CEO of Channels.com, a distributed guide and marketing system for web video. Channels provides video programmers and the video rights holders with the web's best system to increase viewers of their content. Sean is also the CEO of Odyssey Telecorp, a investment holding company he founded in 2002 with the goal of acquiring technology and telecom businesses that, at that time, most investors viewed as "out of favor." During 2002-2005, Sean and his partners at Odyssey acquired and operated a series of companies including cellular tower services, wholesale fiber optic services, and new media. Sean is probably best known for his role as founding COO of @Home - the giant broadband services company conceived by Will Hearst and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins with cable-TV legend, John Malone. While with @Home, Sean had senior oversight responsibility for the company's day-to-day operations. Later, Sean became president of the company's business services division - @Work. In 1997, @Home completed one of the year's most successful IPOs. Early in his career, Doherty pioneered the market for instant messaging software in enterprises. In 1984 Doherty was the founder/CEO of Tradenet, where he developed one of the world's first instant messaging products and built an installed base of trading and brokerage customers that ultimately spanned 20 countries. In 1992 he founded Team Software where he developed the first IM product for private corporate networks and the Internet. Sean is currently the Chairman of Channels.com and Progress Telecom Holdings ("PTH").
