Doug Mandell specializes in representing clients in all aspects of employment law. Mr. Mandell has extensive experience in both defending and counseling companies. Prior to founding Mandell Law Group, Mr. Mandell specialized in representing management in employment litigation matters at two of the most well known employment law defense firms in the country. At these firms, Mr. Mandell developed his expertise in a wide range of employment law areas, such as: sexual harassment, discrimination, wage and hour class actions, disability discrimination and privacy. In addition to litigating these issues, Mr. Mandell has extensive experience counseling companies on employment law issues and has also gained valuable experience advising companies on employment matters while serving on the management teams of two companies. Mr. Mandell began his career as an associate at Littler Mendelson in San Francisco, California, where he was exposed to all aspects of employment litigation and counseling at the largest law firm in the country engaged exclusively in representing companies in employment law. While at Littler Mendelson, Mr. Mandell was a member of a three person team which successfully overturned on appeal a $1.7 million verdict in favor of a male supervisor terminated for sexual harassment in one of the most significant legal decisions of 1996 in California, Cotran v. Rollins Hudig Hall, Int., 49 Cal. App. 4th 903 (1996), aff'd, 17 Cal. 4th 93 (Cal. 1998). Mr. Mandell resigned from Littler to join the international law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP in San Francisco, California, where he represented and counseled management regarding all aspects of employment law. At Orrick, Mr. Mandell's clients included: Applied Materials, Informix, Seagate Technology, AHL Services, Inc., The Kimpton Hotel and Restaurant Group, Salomon Smith Barney and Siebel Systems. At Orrick, Mr. Mandell represented management in federal and state courts throughout California, as well as in arbitrations and administrative hearings. Mr. Mandell's litigation caseload typically included wrongful termination, sexual harassment, employment discrimination, and wage and hour cases. Mr. Mandell also defended companies in class action lawsuits, including serving on a team of attorneys representing Albertson's in a nationwide wage and hour class action lawsuit. In 1999, Mr. Mandell was selected to be a member of a team of outside counsel to work at Salomon Smith Barney's corporate headquarters in New York for a period of several months to defend a class action lawsuit in which approximately 2,000 current and former employees filed individual claims alleging numerous causes of action including sexual harassment and discrimination, pursuant to a stipulated Dispute Resolution Procedure. Mr. Mandell gained valuable experience being part of the in-house team on this project and worked closely with Smith Barney's in-house counsel, human resource managers and executives throughout the country. As part of this experience, Mr. Mandell successfully investigated and evaluated over 250 claims during an 18-week period in order to respond to a deadline mandated by the Dispute Resolution Procedure. Prior to starting MLG, Mr. Mandell was the Vice President and General Counsel of ememories.com, a pioneer in the online photo-sharing space. At ememories, Mr. Mandell was responsible for all legal matters, including employment law. At this company, Mr. Mandell successfully resolved numerous potentially explosive employment situations, including: negotiating on behalf of the company with the CEO regarding his departure and managing the company's response to unfounded allegations involving discrimination and securities violations by a former senior executive. Mr. Mandell also served as the General Counsel of Tornado Development, Inc., a unified messaging software company, for a year and a half after founding Mandell Law Group.
